Very bad editing meant so many repeating lines. Happened at least 10 times. Great story, though.

Worst Narration
Revisado: 07-05-20
I don’t offer many negative reviews. I feel uncomfortable doing so as I know every book is a labor of love and every performance represents someone trying to turn in their best work. However, I just can’t let this go. How lazy and/or cheap was the production crew on this audiobook? To fail so incredibly on selecting a narrator who could provide the appropriate accents or pronounce incredibly common wartime words and phrases made this the hardest to listen to audiobook - ever. Further, the narrator’s failed attempts to act left the characters sounding immature, in both age and intellect. I can see why, after years of taking in every piece of WW2 historical fiction I could find, this one took so long to pop onto my recommended reading list. I think the story could be a good one if read in paper form or performed by someone else.

So frustrating!
Revisado: 04-19-20
The actual story was interesting. I didn’t learn as much about the revolution as I’d hoped, but it was still informative. The infuriating part of this book was the flow. Yes, it’s all the rage in historical fiction to bounce between the past and present day. This book took it to extremes and constantly bounced between weeks and months within the same chapter. It wasn’t impossible to follow, but in my opinion it makes the reader/listener have to work too hard monitoring the timeline. This made for a much less enjoyable experience. At times it was maddening and pointless. Felt like an effort to do something different simply for the sake of being different.

Because, Evelyn is a woman with secrets, and Evelyn remembers everything. She can never forget the promise she made to the love of her life to discover the truth about the mission that led to his death, no matter what it cost her.

Disappointing
Revisado: 02-23-20
I found this book to be incredibly tedious and overwrought. The sympathy for wartime and post-war Germans was over the top and sometimes offensive, in my opinion. I understood the sentiments, but simply thought they went too far. Most Germans may not have been completely in-the-know with the specifics of what was happening at the camps, but they most certainly knew Jews were being persecuted, dehumanized, and “deported,” never to be heard from again...all at the behest of a man they adored. The book also stretched believability in many areas, which isn’t something I enjoy in this genre. Just not a winner for me. I enjoyed the author’s other book - so I was surprised at my reaction.

Well researched and beautifully narrates
Revisado: 12-27-19
I really enjoyed this story. It wasn’t rushed, but rather allowed to evolved throughout the entire war. So often in this genre there isn’t enough time given to telling a complete story. Loved this book. I very much enjoyed the strong female characters and that the author resisted the trend to make them bright yet frustratingly naive.

I like the plot - but oh my was this a struggle to get through. I normally plow through this genre and this should’ve been in my strike zone. The pace was too slow and I found it very repetitive. Plus, at least two storylines were left either unresolved or unsatisfactorily so.

Enjoy the Book, Not the Sound
Revisado: 08-25-19
Great story and good performance. Performance was overshadowed by having to hear every swallow, sound, page turn, etc., emanating from the narrator. At times it was downright gross. Not her fault, horrible editing and equipment.

Maddening
Revisado: 08-11-19
I can’t get enough historical fiction surrounding WW2. However, this book had a main character far too distracting to qualify as such. While I understand she was written intentionally as annoyingly immature, it simply went too far and it was hard to get caught up in the complete story. I found it unbelievable that anyone could fall so head over heels in love with Sarah when their only experiences with her were overwhelmed by her ridiculous demeanor. It simply wasn’t fathomable. I also felt the Monique angle wasn’t fleshed out - just a few weak nods. I am curious if actually reading the book in print would take some of the whine out of Sarah - but I don’t think I’ll do that experiment.

I enjoyed this book. It seemed historically accurate, for the most part. I did feel like the author tried to cover a little too much ground - the blitz, SOE, the resistance, Nazi interrogations, etc. And the identical twin thread was a little too Lifetime TV for me. Overall - I’m happy with my purchase.
