Any audio book narrated by Neil Gaiman is a pleasure to listen to. His almost musical voice conveys a tone that is serious without being “dramatic.” In this production, he is supported by a talented cast of voice actors led by James McAvoy as The Sandman, aka Morpheus, the Lord of Dreams. McAvoy manages to convey the emotions of a character who is by nature detached and unemotional.

Because Morpheus has existed from the beginning of time, the stories in this collection can range to many times and places. In some, the Sandman plays only a minor role, but others delve into his personal history or build on events told in The Sandman Act I. Being familiar with those stories is sometimes helpful in appreciating those told in this collection, but it is not truly necessary. You may like some of these stories more than others, but you will find that all of them are original and well told.

I knew that Harding’s administration was scandal-plagued, but I had no idea that his personal sexual scandals were so well documented. Nice touch to have Paula Poundstone read an actual letter from Harding’s mistress.

The story of the 1914 Christmas Eve ceasefire is becoming well known, but this version imagines both the suffering and the spirit that led up to that event by focusing on one underage British officer who plays a key role in restoring the humanity of men brutalized by war. At times it was difficult to distinguish between the voices of the various British officers, but the production generally conveyed the story clearly and powerfully.
