Minority Hiring
Revisado: 08-02-24
Very disappointed. Far from being the technical and historical treatment I thought the work would be I found myself immersed in a story about how NASA overcame minority hiring.
I wanted space, rockets and history.

Having enjoyed the movie I was expecting a quaint story along the same lines. Instead this is a deeper decades long relationship with the same meaning but much more involved. A very good story which I am glad to have listened to.

Historia
William Shakespeare's gripping play showed Caesar's assassination to be an amateur and idealistic affair. The real killing, however, was a carefully planned paramilitary operation, a generals' plot put together by Caesar's disaffected officers and designed with precision. Brutus and Cassius were indeed key players, but they had the help of a third man - Decimus. He was the mole in Caesar's entourage, one of Caesar's leading generals, and a lifelong friend.

Interesting
Revisado: 05-16-24
The performance was very matter of fact with no enthusiasm or character to keep you moving forward. The story is always I threshing but slightly different than other versions. A very pro-Octavian telling with superlatives being given to his role with no corresponding actions. Makes for a duller story of facts not actions or storytelling.

The dramatic story of one of America's greatest and most misunderstood military leaders and presidents, this is a major new interpretation of Ulysses S. Grant. Based on seven years of research with primary documents, some of them never tapped before, this is destined to become the Grant biography of our times.

Refreshing
Revisado: 05-13-24
Clocking in at 27 hours you'd think was enough time to cover it all, but it is not. This is a great overview presenting Grant as he was a plain man out to perform his duty with no frills and flourishes. Have read and listened to several biographies this is a more positive view of Grant.

Historia
Paul Revere's midnight ride looms as an almost mythical event in American history - yet it has been largely ignored by scholars and left to patriotic writers and debunkers. In Paul Revere's Ride, David Hackett Fischer fashions an exciting narrative that offers deep insight into the outbreak of revolution and the emergence of the American republic. Beginning in the years before the eruption of war, Fischer illuminates the figure of Paul Revere.

Historia
In AD 200, the Roman Empire seemed unassailable, its vast territory accounting for most of the known world. By the end of the fifth century, Roman rule had vanished in Western Europe and much of northern Africa, and only a shrunken Eastern Empire remained. This was a period of remarkable personalities, from the philosopher-emperor Marcus Aurelius to emperors like Diocletian, who portrayed themselves as tough, even brutal, soldiers.

Revisado: 01-17-24
It is important to have tribes which pressured the Roman Empire put into context regarding the ultimate 'fall' of the Western Empire. Goldsworthy does that nicely. It is just a massive amount of information to cover and absorb. A good book and glad I listened to it.

Historia
In The Civil War: A Narrative, Vol. 3, Shelby Foote follows the events of the war from 1862 through 1864, discussing the strategies of both the North and the South and assessing the performance of the Union generals. The book opens with the beginning of the two final, major confrontations of the war: Grant against Lee in Virginia and Sherman pressing Johnston in North Georgia. In vivid narrative as seen from both sides, he tells of the climactic struggles, great and small, on and off the field of battle, that finally decided the fate of this nation.

Superb History
Revisado: 11-09-22
A magnificent history by a great author. Having read the 3 volumes it was nice to revisit the narrative as an audiobook. Foote brings forth a pro-Southern view but if you've read McPherson or Catton you know the battles and the stories.
