Historia
When she fell asleep, the world was doomed. When she awoke, it was dead. In the wake of a fever that decimated the earth's population - killing women and children and making childbirth deadly for the mother and infant - the midwife must pick her way through the bones of the world she once knew to find her place in this dangerous new one. Gone are the pillars of civilization. All that remains is power - and the strong who possess it.

I couldn’t get through chapter 1
Revisado: 12-08-24
This is an Oryx & Crake/The Handmaid’s Tale wannabe. The writing is not good and it insists upon itself. The “this equals that” bits are very obnoxious and distracting.

Historia
On a cold February afternoon, Stella catches sight of a man she hasn't seen for many years, but instantly recognises. Or thinks she does. At the same moment on the other side of the globe, in the middle of a crowd of Chinese New Year revellers, Jake realises that things are becoming dangerous. They know nothing of one another's existence, but both Stella and Jake flee their lives: Jake in search of a place so remote it doesn't appear on any map, and Stella for a destination in Scotland, the significance of which only her sister, Nina, will understand.

Okay but not a favorite
Revisado: 10-18-24
The story drags on some and is not as intricate as Instructions for a Heat Wave or This Must Be the Place. It was okay overall but not my favorite.

Historia
Mick Hardin is an Army CID officer home on leave, recovering from an IED attack and flirting with prescription painkillers, when a body is found in the center of town. It’s Barney Kissick, the local heroin dealer, and the city police see it as an occupational hazard. But when Barney’s mother, Shifty, asks Mick to take a look, he finds there’s more to the killing than it seems. Mick should be rehabbing his leg, signing his divorce papers, and getting out of town—and most of all, staying out of the way—but he keeps on looking, and suddenly he’s getting shot at himself.

Great story & amazing writing
Revisado: 08-10-22
I love Chris Offutt and this book is so good. I listened to it immediately after The Killing Hills.
The only complaint I have is that in the later chapters there are a few sections in the audio that are swapped. It skips ahead and then goes back to the skipped part. Once I figure out what was happening I could follow but it’s a bit annoying.

Historia
Here is the story of Klara, an Artificial Friend with outstanding observational qualities, who, from her place in the store, watches carefully the behavior of those who come in to browse, and of those who pass on the street outside. She remains hopeful that a customer will soon choose her. Klara and the Sun is a thrilling book that offers a look at our changing world through the eyes of an unforgettable narrator, and one that explores the fundamental question: What does it mean to love?

Very interesting ideas but not fully developed
Revisado: 07-06-21
The premise of the book is really fascinating and thought-provoking. However, it felt unfinished. The dialogue was pretty disappointing and I skipped most of it. The ending was mostly bland. I wish there was more exploration of what happens after an AF is done serving their duty. The narrator was mostly good, but the male voices were a bit obnoxious and unnatural.
