This is a poorly written book which has two dimensional characters and a simplistic society.

The storytelling prior to this book has been good enough that I've kept going, even though the main character is not terribly bright and seems incapable of maturing. However, I had to keep using the "30 seconds forward" button too many times during this book. We already knew most of what this book re-hashed, and Emily keeps wallowing in the same emotional merry-go-round that she's been riding for the 13 previous books. I'm going to return this one; if you're still interested in the series, I recommend completely skipping this one. I'll buy one more, but if it's as bad it's going back too, and it will be the last.

The author is a talented writer, but overall it was too graphic for me. I surrendered during the lengthy torture scene and did not finish it.

The main character was too stupid to make any attempt at washing her hands when she cut herself while handling raw fish.

I'm a very modern, liberal Christian in no way fundamentalist, and I love sci-fi/fantasy ... and I couldn't get very far into this. Although in theory it's based on a reading of the Bible, it misses the heart of Christianity by 100 miles. I have no doubt the author read and researched Biblical text very carefully, but God does not forsake humanity. Ever. You can't go from a setup that acknowledges the Crucifixion directly into a plot point where He does. It's untenable as world-building.

This book (and the other two in this series) are all about man's inhumanity to man, and the corrupting influence of power. Those horses are very, very dead by the time Abercrombie is done beating on them.
The writing and the characterization are very good. He manages to make you care about horrible characters. I borrowed the last two books from the library just to find out what happened to them. I wish I hadn't wasted my time.
In the end, it's too much gore, too much blood, and too much inhumanity. Definitely not worth it, for all the talents of both author and narrator.
If you don't find gore offputting and you like strong writing, there are two notes of caution I would mention: 1) the fantasy elements are weak. Magic exists, but it has no system or rules. The worldbuilding is practically non-existent. 2) He needs an editor with a proper understanding of the subjective. Always the narrator read "as though there was ..." instead of "as though there were ..."

I gave this book a lot more time than I usually would have, because.... Sanderson. He did not disappoint in the end, at least in plot. He did not follow the obvious pathways, and every time I thought that I knew what path he was on, I was wrong.

I admit that I just turned 40. That said, I love YA fiction in which the main character has decent brains and some concept of manners. I truly hate YA fiction in which the heroine cannot tell rudeness from (take your pick): cleverness, sarcasm, insight, or courage. In this book, it was courage. She eventually learned not to be rude when she was wrong, but she never comprehended rudeness as a fault, and the one character that did was portrayed as fundamentally weak. This book was entertaining, but I would not give it to any young person I know.

The characters are one-dimensional, and there's just barely enough plot to get them from one firefight to the next. I gave it over 4 hours to get better. It didn't.

What could have made this a 4 or 5-star listening experience for you?

a good editor

What could Scott Lynch have done to make this a more enjoyable book for you?

Worldbuilding was entirely lacking. Magic and alchemy needed rules. Also, the lovingly detailed descriptions of violence were entirely out of balance with the short, competent, and clever descriptions given to people in the novel. That all the characters in the novel knew only two cusswords and universally preferred one of them was mildly annoying.

Have you listened to any of Michael Page’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

no

If you could play editor, what scene or scenes would you have cut from The Lies of Locke Lamora?

I would have left much of the torture or violence that did not directly contribute to either plot or character development either implied or vastly shortened.
