Historia
Life is hard enough for a teenage girl in 1950s suburbia without having a mother who may—or may not—be a witch. A single mother at that. Sure, she fits in with her starched dresses, string of pearls, and floral aprons. Then there are the hushed and mystical consultations with neighborhood women in distress. The unsavory, mysterious plants in the flower beds. The divined warning to steer clear of a boyfriend whose fate is certainly doomed.

Historia
If You Can Keep It is at once a thrilling review of America's uniqueness, and a sobering reminder that America's greatness cannot continue unless we truly understand what our founding fathers meant for us to be. The book includes a stirring call-to-action for every American to understand the ideals behind the "noble experiment in ordered liberty" that is America. It also paints a vivid picture of the tremendous fragility of that experiment and explains why that fragility has been dangerously forgotten.

A needed missive for a broken country
Revisado: 12-05-20
Having just survived a contentious election, and still living in fear of a renegade soon-to-be exPresident, this book (written in 2016) was sorely needed by me. Hearing the obvious sincerity of the author/narrator moved me to tears in the final concluding passages. Thank you Mr. Metaxas

Historia
Comedy superstar Mike Myers writes from the (true patriot) heart about his 53-year relationship with his beloved Canada. Mike Myers is a world-renowned actor, director and writer and the man behind some of the most memorable comic characters of our time. But, as he says, "No description of me is truly complete without saying I'm a Canadian". He has often winked and nodded to Canada in his outrageously accomplished body of work, but now he turns the spotlight full-beam on his homeland.

A wonderful memoir, with lots of inside tales
Revisado: 08-06-18
This is a very enjoyable listen, in the form of a memoir. He does jump around a bit interposing pieces out of the historical sequence, but without a great deal of confusion what specific era he is discussing. The final chapters of the book dealing with The Next Great Nation program of Prime Minister Trudeau (father of the current PM) and into the current day of Justin Trudeau are inspiring and further kindles the desire to emigrate. There is a long discussion of a mass shooting and acts of violence, and how foreign to Candian ethic and culture that is, whereas in the US it has become much more of the norm. If you haven't seen the YouTube of Mike Myers doing a completely unpaid and surprise campaign bit for Justin Trudeau on the eve of the last election that elected Mr. Trudeau, it is well worth the 15 minutes of your life. Just search Mike Myers, HBO, and Justin Trudeau and you'll be there. Enjoy the YouTube and the book! #tagsgiving #sweepstakes

Historia
Lin-Manuel Miranda's groundbreaking musical Hamilton is as revolutionary as its subject: the poor kid from the Caribbean who fought the British, defended the Constitution, and helped to found the United States. Fusing hip-hop, pop, R&B, and the best traditions of theater, this once-in-a-generation show broadens the sound of Broadway, reveals the storytelling power of rap, and claims our country's origins for a diverse new generation.

a fab companion to the musical, or the soundtrack
Revisado: 08-01-18
I had the wonderful experience of seeing the musical on Broadway this past weekend. I had ordered the tickets a year in advance and treated my wife and daughters to a weekend in NYC. In preparation for the event, my wife and I read the Chernoff biography, which is wonderful in its own right. The soundtrack was listened to by me and my daughters, which added to the preparation. But spending the time to listen to this tome was uniquely wonderful to prepare for the enjoyment of the musical. Understanding the years that were spent and the huge effort of hundreds of people, was a revelation to me. The companion PDF, the complete libretto of the score, is a gem. To follow along with the soundtrack, especially to a middle-aged caucasian who has not developed a hip-hop ear to understand the staccato delivery of rapid-fire rhymes, allows you to comprehend and appreciate the depth of the social commentary and historical allusions, and the wide-ranging humor incorporated into the lyrics. I put the PDF on my iPad and scrolled along with the soundtrack, and my appreciation was greatly enhanced. A bonus is that there are side-notes on every page with reflections, explanations, historical and musical tributes on every page entered by Lin-Manuel Miranda that enhance the understanding of what he was accomplishing with the lyrics.
Well worth the time, effort, and small price to invest for any Hamilton aficionado, whether it is via Chernoff, Lin-Manuel Miranda, the musical, or the soundtrack. #tagsgiving. #sweepstakes

Historia
In Shaker Heights, a placid, progressive suburb of Cleveland, everything is planned - from the layout of the winding roads to the colors of the houses to the successful lives its residents will go on to lead. And no one embodies this spirit more than Elena Richardson, whose guiding principle is playing by the rules. Enter Mia Warren - an enigmatic artist and single mother - who arrives in this idyllic bubble with her teenage daughter, Pearl, and rents a house from the Richardsons.

I’m struggling to think of something positive to say about this book. It doesn’t seem to have a theme, not much plot, and the characters aren’t engaging . The grammar was generally correct. Yep! That’s about the best thing I can say.

Historia
Thomas Jefferson is still presented today as a hopelessly enigmatic figure despite being written about more than any other Founding Father. Lauded as the most articulate voice of American freedom even as he held people in bondage, Jefferson is variably described by current-day observers as a hypocrite, an atheist, and a simple-minded proponent of limited government.

Repetitive, overly rhetorical style, unpleasant performance
Revisado: 08-22-17
This book lacks academic rigor, IMHO. Instead of stating a thesis and supporting with well researched evidence, the author relies too heavily on repetition and rhetorical style . Also, there is an assumption that the reader is well versed in US History of the era, which creates a paradox: a reader sufficiently knowledgeable to use this book on its own wouldn't find it particularly informative, fresh or insightful, and someone with a only passing knowledge would need additional references to augment the scope of this book. It's also highly repetitive and performed in a preacher's style, as if the author believed a thesis can be substantiated by repetition of an opinion delivered with great feeling in a sing song . There wasn't much new for me in this book, and I didn't have the sense that the info it provided supported its title.

Historia
With Barack Obama's historic election in 2008, pundits proclaimed the Republicans as dead as the Whigs of yesteryear. Yet even as Democrats swooned, a small cadre of Republican operatives, including Karl Rove, Ed Gillespie, and Chris Jankowski, began plotting their comeback with a simple yet ingenious plan. These men had devised a way to take a tradition of dirty tricks - known to political insiders as "ratf**king" - to a whole new unprecedented level.

Follow up after listening to Dark Money, how it happened
Revisado: 05-21-17
I listened to and "enjoyed" (enraged is perhaps more appropriate a term). This filled in a lot of the details on how the will of the Tea Bagger minority rode to victory at the expense of "one person, one vote". #tagsgiving #sweepstakes
