Historia
Zachary Quinto - best known for his role as the Nimoy-approved Spock in the recent Star Trek reboot and the menacing, power-stealing serial killer, Sylar, in Heroes - brings his well-earned sci-fi credentials and simmering intensity to this audio-exclusive novella from master storyteller John Scalzi. One day, not long from now, it becomes almost impossible to murder anyone - 999 times out of a thousand, anyone who is intentionally killed comes back. How? We don't know.

Despite needing to explain a sci-fi reality this short story doesn’t get bogged down one bit, which, alone, deserves major accolades. The pacing is excellent, the story is fun, the characters are likable and interesting, all around it’s a great story line and I’ll definitely be listening to the other installments

Disaster. There was no other word to describe how Operation Olympic had changed in a flash from a triumph to the worst failure the Merry Band of Pirates had ever experienced. A failure that meant the fight was over. Unless the Pirates could perform a miracle, without Skippy.

Another excellent installment. Can’t wait for the next book! Well written, great pacing, and the cliffhanger didn’t enrage me this time. So yay for that 😂

Historia
A man. His ex-girlfriend's cat. A sadistic game show unlike anything in the universe: a dungeon crawl where survival depends on killing your prey in the most entertaining way possible. In a flash, every human-erected construction on Earth - from Buckingham Palace to the tiniest of sheds - collapses in a heap, sinking into the ground. The buildings and all the people inside have all been atomized and transformed into the dungeon: an 18-level labyrinth filled with traps, monsters, and loot.

I’m not the target demographic for this book (42 & female) but I’m a weirdo so whatever.
If you’re a veteran you’ll probably like this book. Unless the military succeeded in removing your sense of humor.
Narration is excellent and really makes it!

Disappointing
Revisado: 12-05-23
I really had hoped the author would have improved his writing skill. I wound up listening to much of the book at 2x just to get it over with. The story was mediocre, the characters were immature and the overall creativity and writing was not an improvement upon the final book in the Inheritance Cycle.

Wasted Potential
Revisado: 12-18-21
Meh. This book had so much potential but I found myself so relieved when it was finally over. I was too invested to just stop listening even though I really was sick of the authors style.
The author keeps the excessive dramatics cranked up to an 11 out of 10 the entire time. Since the listener cannot keep our own emotions high keyed the result is feeling a bit exhausted and breaking the suspension of disbelief.
The story winds up being like a ridiculous daytime tv drama. Soap operas are tiresome and absurd and if I’d known that was how this entire book would be start to end I would have passed for sure.
The main character feels sorry for himself way too often and the story can’t decide if he is useful or useless. The whole thing is inconsistent and annoying and way, way too slow. Too full of self-pitying monologues and unrealistic behavior.
The story had so much potential. It was a really great idea. Unfortunately the writing was not well done and the idea was ruined as a result.

Manlier than saying “Rock Auto”
Revisado: 12-18-21
This book is so Klavan I’m not sure there is any better way to describe the writing. You can tell the book comes from his brain (heart, soul).
If I didn’t enjoy the personality of the author and listened to this book “blind” I would think the book is too melodramatic and cheesy and the romanticism is just a tad over-done.
That said, knowing (and liking) the author made the book very enjoyable since you can really see his personality and values shine throughout the book. It makes the cheesy parts endearing and allows you to enjoy the story and characters a lot more.
Would definitely LOVE to buy/listen to another book with the main character. There is so much to develop and the book doesn’t leave you annoyed with that, but definitely interested in having the character filled out and explored.
Klavan’s character building is fantastic and really brings the people to life. No two-dimensional characters in his work. The people are nuanced and well written. That is a highlight of the story, makes it rich and you almost feel the story with this kind of writing vs just hearing descriptions.
It would be such a waste to toss this main character. I am looking forward to another depressing holiday story with this guy! 😂 well worth the listen.
