Being Rob Crawley’s old lady requires an inner strength that Tina Douglas lacks. The perfect, red Mary Magdalene rose inked on the nape of her neck becomes a touchstone in times of stress and anxiety, which are many. Tina views her future as bleak and dire and sees herself trapped “in a web of her own making”.

A wild ride
Revisado: 05-25-21
Larry Weiss' debut novel, "Girl with the rose tattoo" is a fantastic audiobook that is sure to have you on the edge of your seat. Set in the Canada in the 1980s, we take a quick trip back in time to teenage punk girls and biker gangs. Christina "Tina" Douglas has been on her own since her mother threw her out at 16. Taking a cue from her older sister Jewel, Tina gets herself mixed up in a local biker gang as the "old lady" of Robert "Bugs" Crawley. After many wrong turns, Tina is finally graduating from High School and hoping to make something of herself. But after the drunken and abusive graduation party Rob planned, Tina finds herself pregnant and on the street. Time flies and Tina is in the hospital in labor and makes friends with her roommate, Jenny, another teen mom. The girls form a strong connection and when Rob tries to force himself back into the picture after the baby is born, Tina moves in with Jenny and her family. Together the girls navigate their next steps to keep Tina safe, jobs and sexuality.
Girl with the Rose Tattoo is full of twists and turns that will take you by surprise and keep you wanting more. I enjoyed listening to the narrator and I thought she did a wonderful job of changing her voice for the characters and giving life to the teenage girls. Sometimes it's easy to get lost in which character is speaking, but not in this case! One reviewer wrote that he felt the narrator over acted a lot of dialog, but infact, I believe she was portraying exactly how a teenage girl would... and sometime they overreact. (Having been one, I'd know). Overall, I thought this was a fantastic audiobook and highly recommend it. Due to language, strong sexual content, and abusive situations, I feel this book is best suited for a very mature audience. I hope you enjoy the audiobook as much as I did. Happy Listening!

Good book for the right person
Revisado: 04-12-21
Ignorance of Means is a story of a young woman, Catherine Drummond, who is married off to a man who turns out to be the exact opposite of what she expected. Hoping to marry into a loving relationship like her parents, she instead finds a harsh and loveless man who wants nothing to do with her other than to sire a child. After several bouts of abuse (*trigger) at the hands of her husband's handler, the young woman devises a plan to escape with the only friend she has, her maid. Determined to get back to her mother and father, Catherine escapes, but not without complications. Over and over again Catherine is faced with obsticals and survives, almsot out of luck, not necessarily out of resilience. Eventually she makes it to a safe place and decides to start a new life there. Although this book wasn't for me, doesn't mean it isn't the perfect book for you! A fictionaol account of what many women through in the 18th century, Ignorace of Means is the perfect book for anyone who loves historical reads. One of the biggest problems I had was was the narrator. Although she did a nice job making use of her French, for me it was hard to listen to and detracted from the story.

In Nobody Eats Parsley: And Other Things I Learned from My Family, David Oakley ushers us front and center to the inner circus of his family life. These are stories so ridiculous, you might think they‘re fiction. They‘re not. If you‘re looking for the antidote to 2020 - look no further. Each chapter is filled with hilarious true events from David‘s world, and there‘s a nice life lesson "takeaway" from each.

Don't judge a book by it's cover... literally! This book has nothing to do with parsley... except for that one story about parsley, but I'm not going to ruin it for you. Author David Oakley narrates his own book in this hilarious book comprised of mini stories of his life. One of my favorite things about audiobook is listening to them on my long drive to and from work, and let me tell you, I was cracking up 30 minutes at a time. Oakley doesn't hold back and knowing that these are his stories, makes listening to Oakley tell them even better. It wouldn't be nearly as fun listening to someone else recount these personal details. Some of my favorite stories are "My Tattoo"... it's quite relatable, "Christmas Spirit" because everyone loves gift cards and of course "Nobody Eats Parsley" (cue the earmuffs)! I highly recommend Nobody Eats Parsley for a mature audience. Due to language and insinuated scenes , this book is definitely not for younger ears. You'll be thoroughly entertained, I promise! Happy listening!

Rebellion is Good
Revisado: 10-02-20
A Little Rebellion Is a Good Thing: Troubles at Traymore College by Duncan Clarke is a great novel and one I really enjoyed listening to. When David Prichard takes a job at an all women's college in Western Virginia in the 1960s he isn't prepared for what he is faced with once he arrives. Once at the school, he finds copious amounts of freedoms being taken away from not only the students at the college, but also other faculty and all of it is lead by the ultra conservative President Barton. Almost immediately after his arrival at the school, students start showing up in his office asking for help when they find out that David has a law degree. Even other faculty start reaching out to him for help, delving into how their basic freedoms of speech and tenure are being undermined by Barton. Making alliances, some intimate and some platonic, with both students and faculty, including one of Barton's own right hand ladies, David begins his rebellion against the President even when threatened with never being able to find another job in academia. David begins receiving the brunt of Barton's fury, and when Barton can't physically take action himself he hires a man to get rid of Prichard. Thankfully, the hero of the story is really man's best friend, and David's best friend, as she keeps a watchful eye on David and protects him multiple times.
I have really enjoyed listening to this novel and the narrator was wonderful. I did have a bit of a hard time at first, as there is a high pitched noise in the background of the recording. I at first thought it was supposed to mimic nature sounds but then it continued through most of the recording. Eventually I learned to turn it out, but it was quite distracting at first. I highly recommend A Little Rebellion is a Good thing to anyone who loves a good suspense and a fight for what's right.

Historia
Et omnia recta - to make things right. In the late 1800s, a secret society was formed by a captain from Teddy Roosevelt’s Rough Riders with the support of the nation’s leading industrialists and bankers. Over a century later, the tradition continues in the same saloons and boardrooms of New York City, where it all began. In this crime thriller, where history and current events unite, Woodbury Kane, Jacob Riis, and Roosevelt himself fight the tyranny of Tammany Hall in the first mission of the volunteers during the turn of the last century.

Entertaining Thriller
Revisado: 08-31-20
Not all authors can weave past and present story lines into a believable parallel story, but John Nuckel has done just that. In fact there were times I had to remind myself that what I was listening to was in fact fiction and the Volunteers aren't a real society out there trying to secretly protect us. The backstory wasn't just told to us, but instead we are transported into the past almost as if we are sitting in the meetings with Roosevelt and his co-horts.
Annie is a NY cop who finds herself sitting at the dinner table talking to her father who has begun to tell her about how he believes she is the "perfect fit"... but for what she is confused. The Volunteers. The story takes Annie on a journey to protect a man who could save the US from disaster. The problem is, Annie isn't sure who to trust and what is safe, putting her life on the line for this man and to uphold the Volunteer code.
One of the first impressions an audiobook listener has is the narrator. Garfield Maitland really rises to the occasion and delivers a great piece. He draws the listener in and and helps us to differentiate between characters with different voices, all the while keeping a dark sometimes haunting vibe that oozes secrecy. If you love a good thriller, you will love Drive.

Not for the weak of heart
Revisado: 05-15-20
Fatal Flaws is the story of a man who is determined to keep his family safe not matter what... even if that means killing. Mark is a gynecologist with an amazing career, a loving wife, and wonderful kids. He has come a long way to get where he is today and he isn't going to let anything get in the way of that. Growing up in an abusive home, Mark knows the signs and what the outcome can be if a woman chooses to ignore the signs, so when his eldest daughter marries a jerk, Mark sees red flags. Calling upon his best friend to fulfill the pack they made years ago to protect each others families, they set out to take care of the new son-in-law. But when Mark's best friend doesn't stop there, Mark makes the ultimate decision to put his family first and make sure his long time friend, disappear.
Fatal Flaws is a great book, but it takes quite a while to get through the backstory. This is not a quick listen/read, at over 12hours of listening time, it's a commitment. More than half of the book is filling the reader in on Mark's past and how he came to be who he is today. The thing is, it could have been shorter. Fatal Flaws is detail after detail. Don't get me wrong, it's not a bad thing, just much longer and drawn out than I expected. I enjoyed Fatal Flaws and highly recommend this audio book for anyone who likes a good suspense... it will keep you waiting! But it isn't for the faint of heart or ears. The book is full of foul and crass language and of course, murder. This book is not suited for a younger audience and should be listened to/read by a mature reader. The narrator's even tone wasn't my favorite and I would have preferred a bit more energy, but it didn't take away from the story line. If you can push through, and keep listening, you will ultimately enjoy Fatal Flaws. Happy Listening

exciting story, voice character narrator
Revisado: 12-10-19
The Sparks is a great first book in a series that will keep you wanting more. When I first started listening to The Sparks, I wasn't overly thrilled with the narrator. I actually hated it. I didn't really like the voices he was giving to the characters, they weren't what I'd hear in my own heard, or how I felt the story should be read. But after a little bit, learning more about each individual, I was able to let go of what I thought they should sound like and fully take in the narrator who is an amazing voice actor. He has an incredibly way of bringing certain characters to life... even if I didn't think a certain character sounded the way he conveyed. There were a couple of characters that I truly had a distaste for, and couldn't help but cringe when they were talking, and it was due to the fact that the narrator used his voice to make the character so slimy and despicable that anyone would want to stop listening. But in fact, I couldn't stop listening. I wanted to know what was going to happen to the Lightborne (kids), and find out their fate. In the same fashion as The Hunger games, The Sparks is a young adult /teen book that takes us on an adventure in a different world. This isn't a post apocalyptic world, but a world where three families of royalty, who hate each other, have been segregated and kept inside a large wall. When the so called government/military turns on them, the teens - who are the only members of the families left, decide to band together to save themselves.
I look forward to the second book and listening to it on my way to work each day. It is entertaining and intriguing with plenty of twists and turns and a hint of romance to satisfy any book lover. I highly recommend this book for any young adult, mature teen, or older reader. Due to graphic material, this book is not suited for children or younger ears. I hope you enjoy it as much as I did. Happy Listening!

Good book, okay audio
Revisado: 05-18-19
A Titanic like romance, a young American, Scott, sees a beautiful aristocratic woman, Desiree, and she becomes his main goal. They meet on a trip across the see, where Desiree is returning home and Scott is headed to Geneva for grad school. Though several other ladies come into Scott's life, he always has the Countess at the back of his mind. Then the meet up again, and it's kismit. They begin an affair and Scott's school suffers as he tires to keep up with Desiree's busy and elegant life. But as he is pulled farther into love with this amazing woman, he pushes everything else aside, even the obstacles that they face as a couple. Neither of their parents approve, and Desiree is Catholic, while Scott is Baptist. Will their love make it?
I was excited to get this audiobook to listen to on the way to work. Many of the other books I've listened to have had very expressive readers, and although Ms. Benson is wonderful with French, I felt the characters lacking in the way the story was read; especially Scott, the main character who I seemed rather expressionless. So many of the other characters seemed full of life, and I had a hard time with listening due to this. The story itself was entertaining and because everyone reads characters differently I would recommend this book, especially for those who like romance. The story was reminiscent of an older style of writing where there are little to no graphic scenes, and one is left to imagine what is happening between sections and chapters. This audio book would be suitable for young adults and mature readers who like a good "old school" romance.

Pam isn’t shy about revealing that her many treks down the aisle eventually led from the altar to the divorce court. During a 13-year hiatus from saying, "I do," Pam used this time to reflect on her past relationship choices and often hasty decisions. Revisado: 04-05-16
The Ring Exchange is a funny self help book in which Pam Evans walks us through her experience with 4 failed marriages and what she has learned from them. This is my first audio book, and although I prefer to physically hold a book it was nice to be able to multi-task while listening to Pam's story narrated by Ms. Parker.
I loved Pam's stories and her take-aways from each situation. From going out to lunch in California vs New England to each of her ring exchanges, she provides us with humor and insight into what she (and others) may be thinking as they traverse the road of life and multiple marriages. And she after each chapter she even sums it up with "Lessons Learned."
I am happily married (1st marriage) and plan to stay that way for a long time, but I know several people who could have used this book before they went running down the isle towards marriage. This book though, can be for anyone, single, married, remarried, remarried again... The main thing, and what I loved best was, although it took her many years to learn, what we all need to know before we marry, is ourselves. If you don't know yourself, who you are and what you really want, then a partner is only going to complicate that and you may find yourself on the other side of the ring ex-change.
