YA isn't my thing, but really enjoyed this!

Surprisingly gripping storyline. Narrator is less than average; she sounds like she is reading from a script, and the lack of contractions makes it even worse. ("Can not" instead of "can't", for example.) She sounds very stiff. In addition, her accents are inconsistent and also not very good. I will listen to the next one - story is great.

Kept trying , but... ick

I still can’t understand why this book got so many good reviews. I really tried to like it, but I just found the premise too far-fetched to suspend my disbelief. I even waited a month and then listened again. But was just as disappointed as I was the first time. Perhaps it’s a better read than it is a listen? Narrater sounded forced to me.

Terrible narrator ruins a less than mediocre story. Her voice is grating on the nerves, and the story falls flat with too many superlatives. Very immature.

Bizarre - did I miss something?

I have enjoyed several of Ella James's books, but I found this one completely bizarre -- almost as if I started listening in the middle. The plot was fractured and confusing, and Jim Steel's voice was all wrong for the story. I found his accent grating and his faux-deep-gravely-voice very unconvincing. He also sounds like he's about 100 (a little creepy in a romantic lead). Perhaps I would have more success reading it, but the story line was so flat I'm not tempted to try.

Woe is me

What would have made Some Sort of Happy better?

I am only 6 minutes into the book and already I can't stand the protagonist's "woe is me" attitude. If I wanted to listen to someone whine incessantly I would talk to my children. Narrator made it worse with her overly-nasal voice. I never return books, but this one is going back.

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

Yes, but not the audio version. Lidia Dornet was fabulous, as always, but Shaun Grindell ruined the entire listening experience for me. I looked up his bio and it says that he grew up in England, but he sounds Australian in this audio version. (The character he is portraying is supposed to be British.) More annoying, however, is the homogenous cadence he uses -- every sentence has the exact same inflection. If I could have reached through my headset and punched him in the throat I would have. Aaargh!!! SO distracting!

Who would you have cast as narrator instead of Lidia Dornet and Shaun Grindell ?

Lidia Dornet's performance of the male character was strong enough on it's own -- no need for a male narrator!

The tag line for the audio book should be "Death By Hemorrhaging Ear Drums".

Listen to the sample first! The male narrator was a complete deal-breaker for me. For the first time, I'll be returning an Audible purchase.
