It is a hallmark movie in book form. Quick easy read that I enjoyed. Liked the readers. Main characters were good. Someone said a good option if you liked Gilmore Girls. I think I agree. Lots of caring family and a handsome standoff man. That loves with his entire heart

I wish the main character would win an argument with the vampires once in a while. Or show some gumption in sneakily getting back at their over bearing butts.

Below are going to be spoilers
I almost stopped reading this book several times because of Liam and Thomas.
Liam is showing ever red flag of an abusive boyfriend. Manipulating threatening coercion and violence. Isolating her from the life she has built. When she tries to escape they kidnap her and guilt trip her. All for her own good of course. Because he is a creepy old guy that knows best. The few times he shows compassion is mainly when she is injured.

Thomas on the other hand murders her and then tells her it’s her own fault for having such a crappy life. That taking away her right to consent is ok because she was not living up to her potential. Then as soon as she gives an inch (which Liam forced her to do but that’s ok because at the last minute he tried to help kind of) Thomas tries to control her. Forgetting the agreement that was struck. When she hesitates he forces things once again without full consent.

Lastly in all three books the head guys don’t listen to her and keep things from her. For really aggravatingly stupid reasons. For example in the last book she went to the alpha werewolf to try to help him. Instead of listening to her and going to talk privately he treated her like an enemy. Even though she played a big part in saving him in book 1. Then they wouldn’t tell her about the demon. Which if they had sooner may have saved Caroline and found Thomas his descendants. Instead they treat her like garbage and Liam manipulated her into recognizing her murder and giving him power.

They also never are shown apologizing when she is proven right for the way they treated her. I guess I will just have to live with my love hate of these books.

I do not think there are any spoilers in this but I am on book 3 so read on at your own risk.

I like the main character. In general I like a woman that tries to make her own way in the world. I like that she can still be scared or sad and not a bad ass all the time. I do wish she would think things through a little more sometimes. She and the interesting mysteries in the books have kept me reading. Even when it is sometimes pretty clear to me who was at fault.
So here is my problem. The way the other vampires treat her is very wrong (to me). I understand there are supposed to be rules but it basically feels like abuse to me most of the time. She says no so they threaten. She says no so the kidnap. She says no so they make her ability to help someone contingent upon her bowing to them and giving up pieces of herself. It is rarely a compromise it is normally shoved down her throat one way or the other.

Then the whole you are just a dumb female newborn attitude drives me up the wall. You are insignificant and weak. How dare you have opinions of your own or want to lead your own life. Yes it is good to see her fight against this but most of the time they steamroll her or manipulate her. I have liked books with alpha guys in them (Kate Daniel series) but most of the time the heroine is able to stand her ground. I am about to go rant more in my review for book 3 if you want a little more detail but there will be spoilers in that for sure

When I first bought this there were a couple books out and I binged them all. I have been listening to the next every time a new one is out. The sixth just came out so I decided to relisten to them all. I binged the whole thing in about 3.5 days. I like that she gets help on her mysteries but most of the time she solves them herself. I also enjoy the growth that Bea shows in the series. It is great watching her learn who and what she is. It is also fun to watch her relationships grow not just with a Man (though that is great),but also her cousins and other friends.

The narrator is great and I would love listening to her again.

Might be my favorite book in all the series

This may just be my favorite book in all her series. I was worried that it would be too much like the others and bore me but it was great. I stayed up way too late listening and finished the whole thing in 2 days. Now I want the next one. It reminds me of the first season of the walking dead and not just because of the zombies. I don’t mean the plot line is the same though. It is just the feeling of family. The people you loved before the apocalypse and the new people who become family.

Sarah does a great job making her characters real. None are perfect most have a weird quirk or two. She allows us to laugh one minute and the next chapter worry about our favorite character. I would recommend this book to zombie lovers or someone who likes a good story about how loving complicated and hurtful family can be.

All 4 of the narrators were great and I would love listening to them again. I am going to try and figure out which one was Rose’s because she may be my favorite (also one of my favorite characters so that may make me bias). Having the different narrators also helped with keeping people straight.

If you liked this one and have not read the other two series set in this world I highly recommended you pick them up while waiting for the next one of these.

Stop making Scout dumb to make Zoe look good

Before I go in my rant I should say I have been listening to this series from the beginning. Heck I have read/listened to a lot of Amanda’s books. I like the narration. The story itself was good. I like the characters. I enjoyed the over all path.

The problem i have is in my opinion the author keeps dumbing Scout down to show how great Zoe is. First time I noticed is with born vampires. In the very last book Scout was telling everyone about born and made vampires. In this book Zoe tells her that the vamp is born and Scout is all “I didn’t know that was a thing.” That’s a lie the first time I noticed was in the same conversation when talking about how she got by the barrier in the last book. “I still don’t know how it worked. I sort of made myself fluid when slipping through oh and invisible.” In the last book she said she was shifting planes. Then her wards aren’t good enough. Then Zoe can heal, and Scout wishes she could. In the first book she healed Raisin. The author could have had Scout want to be as quick as Zoe is at healing. When she healed Raisin it did seem to take a while. Instead she makes Scout say she can’t. I know it is easy to pick out little things in series that change like eye color or maybe the order something happened in when reading a whole series. This is not little things. Every time it happens it knocks me out of what is a good story. Heck I went back and relistened to the vampire one because I thought I heard wrong.

I read a review that the book was depressing. After reading I can see why. I personally don't think it was depressing but I like post apocalyptic books. I enjoyed the book. I liked coral and thought her reaction to the situation was believable.

I have read all three books in the trilogy prior to writing review.

I liked this series a lot. It follows a smart 16 year old girl Cia through the trials of the test to get into the university and the secrets revealed during the testing. It goes on to deal with the secrets and how the decisions she makes.

The world in which she lives has been devastated by a war fought with nuclear, and biological weapons, and an earth that has had horrible earth quakes and other natural disasters. The initial struggle to survive has already happened. A new government established and lives are back to a new normal. The new government is lead by only people who have graduated the university. The only way to even get into the university for the kids from the colonies is to pass the test. The University graduates all lead the county. They go into government, teaching, medicine, technology, genetics, and more. After the war the government has been trying to restore the lands. They have to clean water engineer plants that will grow, fix genetic issues in animals, and fix/invent new technology to help make life better. She is the daughter of a University graduate that has been placed in the 5 lakes Colony to help fix and grow the land. The colony is not perfect, but is a good place to live they help each other, share and generally care for their neighbors. From the very beginning of the book the author lets you see that there are secrets being kept.

The author does a very good job of letting you know who Cia is from the beginning. She is very smart (really wants to go to University not because she wants to be in charge, but because she loves knowledge and her colony and wants to help make peoples life's better), caring (her friendship with Dalene), and understanding of what makes people tick. Through all three books we see her ideas/morals being pushed and questioned. You get to see that her caring is not a hindrance and that when push comes to shove she has a backbone. Something about Cia made me think of a quote from Dumbledore “Those who are best suited to power are those who have never sought it. Those who have leadership thrust upon them, and take up the mantle because they must, and find to their own surprise that they wear it well.”

Yes this book follows in Divergent, Hunger Games, and Razorland's footsteps. I actually think I liked it better than some of them. The characters are put through a lot and have to make hard decisions, but in some ways the story is more believable. I think I also enjoyed Cia more through all three books than some of the other leads.

There is less of the teen angst than some YA novels can fall into. On a side note there is some romance which I always enjoy in my books.

I have seen the narrator being criticized for having a young voice. For me this was not a bad thing. Cia is only 16 she is young.

There is no sex in the whole series.
