Definitely recommend reading this .5 book in between books 1 and 2. I guess it would be fine to read before book 1 but I really enjoyed the aha moments that came from having already read book 1 in the series when I read this one

The first book in this series was sloooow world building but every book following (and even the .5 book that you should read between the 1st and 2nd books in the series) has been better and better! Definitely recommend

Don't give up

several of the reviews say this and I agree completely. don't give up on this slow to start story! hold on until about chapter 9 and then it starts getting better. I'm not going to say any part of this book was fabulous but I believe the whole first book was character and world building and I have a lot of faith at the second book is going to be rather epic. I will say that her take on magic and specifically Phoenix is new and exciting.

I love these books. I've read/listened to every single one and the added smaller stories in between some of the earlier ones. I think it wasn't until this one or the last one that I finally figured out who the candy thief is!! IMO. If JD Robb reads this.. PLEASE get Eve pregnant and while she's off work on maternity leave she investigates the candy thief only to discover she's married to him!?! lol PLEASE
