Historia
Is the world really falling apart? Is the ideal of progress obsolete? In this elegant assessment of the human condition in the third millennium, cognitive scientist and public intellectual Steven Pinker urges us to step back from the gory headlines and prophecies of doom, which play to our psychological biases. Instead, follow the data: Pinker shows that life, health, prosperity, safety, peace, knowledge, and happiness are on the rise, not just in the West but worldwide.

a great book. The term polymath is overused but it is appropriate for Pinker. I reread it even.

Sounds like an insider account

Lots of info that had to have come from the CIA, but not a well known story.
One loose end was the Aldrich Ames story. The author brought his name up as if he played a roll in exposing the spy, but then let it drop.

Good info about Ranger training and culture but it sounds at some point like a religious sermon.

Historia
We human beings share 98 percent of our genes with chimpanzees. Yet humans are the dominant species on the planet - having founded civilizations and religions, developed intricate and diverse forms of communication, learned science, built cities, and created breathtaking works of art - while chimps remain animals concerned primarily with the basic necessities of survival. What is it about that two percent difference in DNA that has created such a divergence between evolutionary cousins?

A Precursor to Guns, Germs and Steel
Revisado: 06-08-18
The book was apparently the first that Jared Diamond wrote, and is excellent. It is about 25 years old, however, and some of the information is out of date.
Some of the information was elaborated in Guns, Germs and Steel.

Historia
In The Blank Slate, Steven Pinker, one of the world's leading experts on language and the mind, explores the idea of human nature and its moral, emotional, and political colorings. With characteristic wit, lucidity, and insight, Pinker argues that the dogma that the mind has no innate traits, denies our common humanity and our individual preferences, replaces objective analyses of social problems with feel-good slogans, and distorts our understanding of politics, violence, parenting, and the arts.

There's a lot of wisdom in here, but had I known it was written in 2002 but might not have bought it. The examples are from way in the past.

Historia
This fresh and challenging inquiry into human societies takes a deep look at the effects and roles of war. As the most complex of all human endeavors, warfare - from ancient to modern - has spurred the growth of essential new technologies; demanded the adoption of complex economic systems; shaped the ideology and culture of nations; promoted developments in art and literature; and spread faith across the globe.
