One-of-a-kind story, well-written and well-narrated. Simon Vance is a great narrator, and perfect for this book. Cherry writes with a great deal of wit and humor, which was unexpected and delightful. The Edwardian style feels old-fashioned, but also modern—not the antiquated stiffness of a Victorian book. Still, the book does get into zoology and other life sciences, which is great if you’re into that, but may be too dry for many. But you HAVE to listen to the titled “worst journey” and what happened once home again. The worst journey in the world (for Cherry) was actually to collect penguin eggs. Scott’s run for the Pole was only half the expedition’s purpose.
Coincidentally I listed to Simon Vance narrate Dune over the summer. I guess he and I have a thing for weather extremes.

My first exposure to Lovecraft’s stories, though I’ve known of Lovecraftian horror for a good while. I like it!

The performance in this is great, so perfect for the content. It would be a challenge to read aloud the unpronounceable words of the ancients, but it sounds like the narrator had fun doing it.

I’d definitely recommend if you’re like me: new to Lovecraft, wanting more than one story, but not wanting ALL the Lovecraft. As another reviewer said, Cthulhu may have all the fame, but the Dunwich Horror is the real must-listen.

What didn’t you like about Julian Reinoso’s performance?

Just listen to the preview (which I stupidly did not do), and you'll immediately know that this performance is unbearably bad. Reinoso is virtually incomprehensible, made so much worse by the fact that his every sentence sounds like it comes from a crappy computer. This version deserves to be erased permanently. Spend the extra money on a better performance, or just get it in print.
