Michael Pollan, known for his best-selling nonfiction audio, including The Omnivores Dilemma and How to Change Your Mind, conceived and wrote Caffeine: How Caffeine Created the Modern World as an Audible Original. In this controversial and exciting listen, Pollan explores caffeine’s power as the most-used drug in the world - and the only one we give to children (in soda pop) as a treat.

Help yourself and others
Revisado: 06-24-22
This book is an in-depth covering of how to create a habit you want or get rid of ones you don’t. Fogg does an excellent job of explaining his research using stories and methods that anyone can relate to and understand.
The supplemental material is fabulous and I wish other authors would take note! Not only does he explain it clearly verbally but he provides an 88 page PDF file with all the graphics and formulas for our use. He also has extra supplemental items on his website. He also includes over 300 tiny habits for us to use or learn from.
Do not be put off by my terminology of formulas and methods. You are not actually going back to math class. 😂 For example, the basic formula is behavior is equal to motivation plus ability plus prompt, or B= MAP.
I highly recommend this book! It’s for everyone.

Good information but challenging as an audiobook
Revisado: 05-30-22
The book has a lot of good information and I do believe that following their program could help energize a person. I really enjoyed the narration. It was fun and engaging as the authors popped in on occasion and read selections. Part one definitely lens itself more to an audiobook, except for the section on the exercises. I was listening to this in the car after a very long day and I was traveling from one state back home, and then I hit an entire chapter where the narrator is describing 25 different exercises in detail at different levels and that was not what I needed to help me stay awake as I drove. It might not have been bad if I had been listening to it at home at a time when I could try out each exercise as it was described.
Part two goes into more details as they gave an example profile of each of the types and how they might go through the program for that type. For my type, I listened with great interest. For the other types, I listened at two times speed just help me understand a little bit for people in my life who are different types than I am.
My primary complaint is that the supplemental material is lacking some key items. Early in the book they describe an exertion scale, that is something you never use in the program but it is included in the supplemental PDF. Along side that scale is an energy scale that you use to measure how much energy you have each day for five weeks. The energy scale is not in the supplemental material and that is a huge oversight!
I would also love to have a simple list of all the exercises in the supplemental material but it isn’t there. They send you to the website so that you can watch a video on how to perform the exercise, but not all the videos are there. Some of the videos are mislabeled. Some are missing. It is disappointing. Plus having a chart of what exercises belong in which category would be much more useful when I want to actually do the exercises then to have to bring up a website.
One of the useful things in the supplemental material are the quizzes. The quizzes are a little challenging to listen to as you’re going to try to mentally keep track of your answers and your score as you’re listening. So don’t worry about that knowing that the quiz is in the supplemental material.
Also, there is a schedule for every type as to when they should be doing each type of exercise as well as when they should start and stop eating. It would be super duper useful to have that information in print form as well! Sadly, it is not a part of the supplemental material.
Included in the material is sample energy diaries. That wasn’t useful at all and was a waste of ink and paper.
Overall I like the book, but I’m going to need to get a physical copy of it in order to actually do the program. I would recommend the physical book for this information over the audiobook. I also want to warn people who are sensitive to profanity that there is swearing in this book.

It tells the story of two friends from college to midlife. It’s a little depressing and sometimes funny. If you let it, it can inspire you can reflect on your own life to hopefully identify what really matters. You have to love Aunt Anna!

Did you know that most of our dinosaur fossils were discovered because two grown men absolutely hated each other? It’s true! Rivals! Frenemies Who Changed the World is a riotous audio exclusive, like if Monty Python taught your history class. Each volume of four 30-minute histories will dig into the petty name-calling and grumbling grudges that led to many of the world’s greatest advancements, all delivered with a cheeky sense of humor. History made interesting
Revisado: 12-25-20
I’m not a big history fan but found this book to be incredibly engaging and entertaining as well as educational. He did a great job of keeping it fun and accurate, I trust. I would recommend it to anyone who has kids as a great book to listen to while in the car. Or if you want to just want to learn a little bit more about Hamilton and Burr, Mary Queen of Scot and Queen Elizabeth, Adidas and Puma, and how the US became leaders in paleontology due to 2 men, Cope and Marsh, who destroyed fossils 😖

A good cozy mystery
Revisado: 03-21-19
This is a nice cozy mystery that kicks off a series. Helen Binney is the retired ex-wife of the governor, who just wants to be left alone in her cottage. She has lupus and two well-meaning, meddling nieces, who insist that she can't take care of herself. As an introvert myself, I really felt sympathy for the heroine, as truly, it seemed that nearly everyone ignored everything she said. It was extremely frustrating. I appreciated that she fought back. I think the book really highlights how people will do things out of love for others that are not only not helpful but intrusive and belittling. Hopefully, it will modify some listeners actions.
Back to the story, the nurse that is foisted upon Helen eventually turns up dead. (Hooray!) The story really takes off from here. With the help of a retired lawyer, a driver, and 2 ladies, who are somewhat trapped in a nursing home, Helen is able to solve a few of the mysteries in the little town. Although, one or two of them seemed more like a lucky guess than brilliant deduction.
The story was fun and the characters enjoyable. I plan on reading/listening to more in the series.
The narrator did a good job. I could easily identify each of the characters. She gives some style to some of Helen's thoughts. The author told me that the narrator sounds exactly like Helen sounded in her head, and I can imagine it. Although, Helen is only 45 years old, and to me, the narrator sounds a bit older, more like late 50's.
I was given a free copy of the book with a request for an honest review.

Miracle Springs is a place of healing. Strangers flock there hoping that the natural hot springs, five-star cuisine, and renowned spa can cure their ills. And, if none of that works, they often find their way to Miracle Books, where, over a fresh-baked scone from the Gingerbread House bakery, they exchange their stories with owner Nora Pennington in return for a carefully chosen book. That's Nora's special talent: prescribing the perfect novel to ease a person's deepest pain and lighten their heaviest burden.

I like the Book Retreat Mysteries better
Revisado: 02-08-19
I really enjoyed the book retreat mysteries more than the Secret, Book & Scone Society. The book retreat mysteries tend to be more hopeful and upbeat. I mean, despite there being a murder. This one was a little more depressing. Each of our four protagonists, & really everyone, had secrets in their past that had caused them a lot of pain. We end up learning each of their secrets, but it does make for a bit more dreary tale. I suppose the overcoming of trials should or could be heartening. I guess I would simply advise not to listen to this on a gloomy winter’s day. Otherwise, the story was well told. You get a lot of details from this author, so don’t expect the story to go quickly. Also relationships build across the series, so again don’t expect anything to happen right away.

From Terry Pratchett's famed Discworld series. 14-year-old Eric is the first ever demonology hacker. Fortunately, he doesn't succeed in raising any devils, but he does raise Rincewind (the most incompetent wizard in the universe) and the Luggage (the world's most dangerous travel accessory).

Much like "Color of Magic"
Revisado: 01-30-18
Would you listen to Eric again? Why?
yes - I'll listen to it with my husband
What was one of the most memorable moments of Eric?
Every scene with Luggage, such as when the doors of hell opened for him so they didn't get destroyed
Have you listened to any of Stephen Briggs’s other performances before? How does this one compare?
nope, but it was definitely different from the other narrator who has been narrating the other Discworld books. Death sounded wrong, but I appreciated the lack of bells, whistles, and whirls that are invariably 4 times louder than the narrator in the other books and that signal a change in scenes.
Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
Not necessarily
Any additional comments?
This is book 4 in the Rincewind series of Discworld and book 9 in the whole of the Discworld series. It is much shorter than previous books. While amusing on its own, some of it will be more enjoyable if you've at least have read the first 3 Rincewind books, if not the previous 8 Discworld books.

Not hard to solve
Revisado: 01-13-18
The mystery wasn't hard to solve. There are a lot of details about Gemma & Oxford. Her dating life was nearly as much of the story as the murder. Gemma at times behaves like an idiot. Still, a fun little cozy. I'm likely to continue listening to the series.

But with so many potential avenues of exploration, it can often seem daunting to try to understand it. Where does one even start?
