Historia
When COVID-19 sweeps through New York City, Jamie Gray is stuck as a dead-end driver for food-delivery apps. That is, until Jamie makes a delivery to an old acquaintance, Tom, who works at what he calls “an animal rights organization”. Tom’s team needs a last-minute grunt to handle things on their next field visit. Jamie, eager to do anything, immediately signs on. What Tom doesn't tell Jamie is that the animals his team cares for are not here on Earth. Not our Earth, at at least. In an alternate dimension, dinosaur-like creatures named Kaiju roam a warm and human-free world.

Marvelous Premise
Revisado: 03-09-25
A somehow implausible concept wrapped in a completely credible package. A mark of excellent fantasy is that it readily becomes so realistic the border vanishes and the telling becomes the tale. Such is the excellence of the Preservation Society. The exciting story, told of a few months of adventure, never fails to be believable because the fantasy never gets in the way. Oh, and it’s a load of fun. A full 100-meters of flying, atomic fun.

James Gleick, the author of the best sellers Chaos and Genius, now brings us a work just as astonishing and masterly: A revelatory chronicle and meditation that shows how information has become the modern era’s defining quality - the blood, the fuel, the vital principle of our world. The story of information begins in a time profoundly unlike our own, when every thought and utterance vanishes as soon as it is born.

Chilling and Spectacular
Revisado: 03-01-25
The insights into our world of information reveal where we have come and hint at our destination. From talking drums to a universe that is a library, this book leaded us by the hand to conclusions both exciting and disturbing. I could have done with a bit less math, but the lessons are pointedly insightful.

When Dorothy and her pet dog, Toto, are swept away from their Kansas home, they find themselves in the magical land of Oz where munchkins live, monkeys fly and Wicked Witches rule. In their quest to return home they meet a cast of characters that have become much loved by families since the story was first published in 1900. Dorothy, played by Lydia West (Years and Years) joins the Tin Woodsman, Scarecrow and Cowardly Lion as they follow the yellow brick road to find the Wizard, played by Jim Broadbent (The Iron Lady, Moulin Rouge).

Fun radio introduction to Oz
Revisado: 09-05-24
This is a nice, pretty faithful radio play of L. Frank Baum’s classic children’s book, The Wonderful Wizard of Oz. The book is the genesis of dozens of books in the World of Oz fantasy series. It might be a good enticement for youngsters to enter a literary fantasy world which has enchanted children for many generations. There are numerous, humorous anachronisms in this play which keep it a fun listen for adults, as well. My favorite almost slides by after the Flying Monkeys (SPOILER ALERT) help the protagonist melt the Bad Witch. The head Flying Monkey says, “leave us a good review, would you?”

A natural storyteller and raconteur in his own right - just listen to Paddle Your Own Canoe and Gumption - actor, comedian, carpenter, and all-around manly man Nick Offerman (Parks and Recreation) brings his distinctive baritone and a fine-tuned comic versatility to Twain's writing. In a knockout performance, he doesn't so much as read Twain's words as he does rejoice in them, delighting in the hijinks of Tom - whom he lovingly refers to as a "great scam artist" and "true American hero".

Delightful
Revisado: 09-02-24
Nick Offerman, Nick Offerman, Nick Offerman. + Mark Twain, + Mark Twain, + Mark Twain = IRRESISTIBLE! Many others have done marvelous jobs of rendering this American classic on audio by mimicking our expectations of the author’s voice but this rendition does so much more: it sounds exactly like Nick Offerman! When I hear his voice, I smile. When I read Twain, I (generally) smile. When the two collaborate, I’m ecstatic. If you don’t like Twain, give this an ear. After all, it’s free ATM. I suspect this might change that curious attitude!

Historia
Leland Gaunt opens a new shop in Castle Rock called Needful Things. Anyone who enters his store finds the object of his or her lifelong dreams and desires: a prized baseball card, a healing amulet. In addition to a token payment, Gaunt requests that each person perform a little "deed", usually a seemingly innocent prank played on someone else from town. These practical jokes cascade out of control, and soon the entire town is doing battle with itself. Only Sheriff Alan Pangborn suspects that Gaunt is behind the population's increasingly violent behavior.

Be Careful What You Wish For
Revisado: 07-28-24
The finest storyteller of our generation spins an intricate tale of supernatural intrusion in to small-town life. The ingenious plot weaves numerous character staples against each other, sewing hate and fear to their mutual destruction. King narrates, so we hear every desired emphasis and inflection he intended. “The whites always have LAW-yours!” It adds additional depth (and humor) other voice actors might miss. I loved this book. It is light on “got ya” moments but resplendent with evil and violence. Through the telling I could visualize King smirking at subtle cultural references and bizarre setups.

King!
Revisado: 06-16-24
What have we done right to deserve to live in the time of King? He cranks out stories like they are newspapers. Not everyone is a stunning success, but the ones which are not are outliers and there seldom is agreement about which are in that category. This collection is in the stupendous column, IMHO. Like most of his tales, this premise will haunt my subconscious for many years to come. Lucky are we to have him among us!

Wonderful, Albeit New Setting
Revisado: 05-23-24
Chief character is Bernie Manuelito, primary location is the line in the sand between Old Mexico and New Mexico. The perennial mystery of the siphoning off of billions of royalty dollars owed to tribes across the country leads to an enormous drug smuggling operation. It’s not comfortably on the Rez we are accustomed to but it illustrates Hillerman’s genius as a story-teller.

Historia
When Lionel Savage, a popular poet in Victorian London, learns from his butler that they're broke, he marries the beautiful Vivien Lancaster for her money, only to find that his muse has abandoned him. Distraught and contemplating suicide, Savage accidentally conjures the devil - the polite "Gentleman" of the title - who appears at one of the society parties Savage abhors. The two hit it off: The devil talks about his home, where he employs Dante as a gardener; Savage lends him a volume of Tennyson.

We might entertain the devil, unawares
Revisado: 05-21-24
This is a frivolous love story where the plot almost gets in the way of the non-sequitur dialogue. The telling of the story is absolutely delightful, albeit a little trite occasionally. There is much nonsensical repartee, a’la Monte Python.

Historia
Though he’s officially retired from the Navajo Tribal Police, Joe Leaphorn occasionally helps his former colleagues Jim Chee and Bernie Manuelito crack particularly puzzling crimes. But there is that rare unsolved investigation that haunts every lawman, including the legendary Leaphorn. Joe still hasn’t let go of his “last case”—a mystery involving a priceless Navajo rug that was supposedly destroyed in a fire. Nine years later, what looks like the same one-of-a-kind rug turns up in a magazine spread, and the man who showed Joe the photo has gone missing.

Delightful , Convoluted and Satisfying
Revisado: 04-23-24
This is Hillerman at his conniving best. I have been a dedicated fan since the 80s and have gorged myself on all of his Leaphorn and Chee detective books. These books are uniquely rich with insight and cultural details of life among contemporary Native Western Americans. Hillerman grew up in Oklahoma with Potawatomi children where he gained a unique perspective of a way of life shrouded by misunderstandings for most European immigrants. Far from being culture lectures, the stories are cracking good tales. The Shape Shifter, however, is my personal favorite, weaving Navaho legend into a contemporary evil with a resolution that leaves me smiling. It is an example of incredible wickedness being overcome by determined good people.

Sensational!
Revisado: 04-07-24
As wrenching as any theatrical rendition on stage I have ever seen. Brilliant script aside, the actors wove the story so skillfully that the tawdry details of Blanche’s history were painfully peeled away for us as sad revelations, even knowing the play. Stella’s love for Stanley, and his for here, were made palpable through the potent timing and vocal inflections of the artists. Only a few explosive moments were confusing to the listener: when the radio is smashed; when Stanley, distraught because he couldn’t find his love, yells for her through his tears. Written for the stage, such moments are clear with the addition of visual information. Faithfully following the script does not lend to the intrusion of a narrator to supplement our imaginations. These minor complications, however, do not rob the audience of an iota the emotional wealth of this rendition. The director’s note explained the situation which led to this bold adventure. This marvelous production, which allows listeners to create their own visualization of “Desire” is indubitably a gift of the wretched pandemic. Handed lemons (to rethink the old maxim) these folks created a theater of the imagination.
