Carefully researched facts told through fictional characters
Revisado: 01-30-25
This is a quite unsavory and complex story of a real situation carefully told through very believable characters. Beautifully believable and written. The true ending of this hideous blot on adoption in Tennessee, in the end it was found out, and the blessings of adoption began. What a storyteller.

Not my cup of tea
Revisado: 01-03-23
Couldn't finish this though I started it over once, thinking if I paid closer it'd be more appealing, but just nor for me. gave it a 3 because I am sure there are people who would enjoy it, but just not for me.
Thanks anyway,

Lovely
Revisado: 05-14-20
McCall Smith has such insight human frailties. I truly enjoyed listening to the interactions, and reflections, between the characters. Always feels as if I learn so much about myself and others I know and love( or do not love) by spending time with this beloved author.

It's early 1938, and Maisie Dobbs is back in England. On a fine yet chilly morning, as she walks toward Fitzroy Square - a place of many memories - she is intercepted by Brian Huntley and Robert MacFarlane of the Secret Service. The German government has agreed to release a British subject from prison, but only if he is handed over to a family member. Because the man's wife is bedridden and his daughter has been killed in an accident, the Secret Service wants Maisie - who bears a striking resemblance to the daughter - to retrieve the man from Dachau....

Very easy to become involved with these believable characters. I enjoyed how subtly the hints and drama evolved.
