Historia
At age 58, Robert Druff’s destructive alter ego has begun to take over his life. Frustrated with his job as Commissioner of the Streets and desperate to protect his aura of power, Druff injects himself into the middle of a conspiracy revolving around the death of his son’s girlfriend - and everyone, from his employees to his mistress, seems to be complicit in the plot. Deeply humorous and engaging, The MacGuffin is a striking exploration of obsession and the imaginative story of a man struggling against his own frailty to regain control of his life.

Great use of language odd story
Revisado: 09-06-19
A day in the life of a flawed man. Takes fanciful if not improbable story lines. A sort of stream of consciousness from a driven almost deranged man. One follows his disjointed flights of fancy, imagination, paranoia, self doubt and aggrandizement. To the extent that he might be everyman this is a cautionary story. The plot is too far fetched and hangs as a vehicle for gambling observations and thoughts.

Historia
The Pale Criminal brings back Bernie Gunther, an ex-policeman who thought he'd seen everything on the streets of 1930s Berlin - until he turned freelance, and each case he tackled sucked him further into the grisly excesses of Nazi subculture. Hard-hitting, fast-paced, and richly detailed, The Pale Criminal is noir writing at its blackest and best.

Historia
In 1943 John Steinbeck was on assignment for The New York Herald Tribune, writing from Italy and North Africa, and from England in the midst of the London blitz. In his dispatches he focuses on the human-scale effect of the war, portraying everyone from the guys in a bomber crew to Bob Hope on his USO tour and even fighting alongside soldiers behind enemy lines. Taken together, these writings create an indelible portrait of life in wartime.

Good start, poor second half
Revisado: 06-01-16
I was hooked on the early story. Characters and story evolve with plots, subplots and a mystery that is absorbing. Once the mystery is solved there are two more hours that just drag on with a murder atempt on the hero which with a first person narrative predictably fails. This leads to an implausible chase through a blizzard, a kidnapping with a rescue that was heavy on suspense but ends without surprise. All is wrapped up in a "live happily ever after" bow. Hopefully this prize winning author will continue his next book with the talent he showed in the first half of this book.

Historia
In this incisive, personal account, David Brock disarms the major tentacles of the Republican Leviathan: the Koch Brothers, the Clinton haters, and the Fox noise machine. With the acumen of a seasoned political player, Brock takes listeners inside his Democratic war rooms and their 24/7 battles with right-wing forces for control of the story lines and messages that will decide the 2016 election. And he chronicles his own evolution from lead Clinton attack dog to one of Hillary Clinton's fiercest defenders as he knocks down the conservative case against her.

Historia
America’s Bitter Pill is Steven Brill’s acclaimed book on how the Affordable Care Act, or Obamacare, was written, how it is being implemented, and, most important, how it is changing—and failing to change—the rampant abuses in the healthcare industry. It’s a fly-on-the-wall account of the titanic fight to pass a 961-page law aimed at fixing America’s largest, most dysfunctional industry. It’s a penetrating chronicle of how the profiteering that Brill first identified in his trailblazing Time magazine cover story continues, despite Obamacare.

Health care, a convoluted expensive system
Revisado: 04-17-15
Describes in detail how ACA came to be the complicated but helpful program it is. An exploration of the drivers of cost in our system. A detailed gaze into the system and why it is so costly. Is objective, praising some, faulting most on particular issues. Makes it clear that Health Care finance is a nuanced issue without facile solutions.
Those willing to put in the time to finish the book will come away with a deep understanding of the nuts and bolts that go into driving health care. economics.
