Historia
In the 12 unforgettable tales of Lesser Known Monsters of the 21st Century, the strange is made familiar and the familiar strange, such that a girl growing wings on her legs feels like an ordinary rite of passage, while a bug-infested house becomes an impossible Kafkaesque nightmare. Each story builds a new world all its own: A group of children steal a haunted doll; a runaway bride encounters a sea monster; a vendor sells toy boxes that seemingly control the passage of time; an insomniac is seduced by the Sandman.

Fascinating & Darkly Engaging

What a fascinating compendium of tales, a reminder that the short stories are magical. As with all collections, I enjoyed some more than others, but they are all unique and inventive.

Lily King is a Master in our Time
Revisado: 12-06-21
Lily King is one of the best writers today. Euphoria and Writers & Lovers were so brilliant, I would read anything she writes. She crafts gorgeous snapshots of life- intimate, delicate and painfully honest. I am often resistant to short stories but this collection is brilliant. The last one may be the perfect short story. She is a master among us.

Is there anything she can’t do?
Revisado: 03-23-21
Julia Whelan is a narrator favorite but here she has created a complete, satisfying and touching novel. Layered and chock full of Oxford glory, it took a couple chapters but I was hooked into this love story with a place as much as with a person. And of course, expert narration!

Historia
You may "know" Jenny Slate from her Netflix special, Stage Fright, as the creator of Marcel the Shell, or as the star of Obvious Child. But you don't really know Jenny Slate until you get bonked on the head by her absolutely singular writing style. To see the world through Jenny's eyes is to see it as though for the first time, shimmering with strangeness and possibility.

Weird and Wonderful
Revisado: 03-23-21
Just like the creator-extraordinaire, this book is quixotic, unexpected, blunt and childlike. The essays are poetry disguised as prose. Thoughtful, funny and smart delivered by a very unique voice.

Historia
On an island off the coast of Ireland, guests gather to celebrate two people joining their lives together as one. The groom: handsome and charming, a rising television star. The bride: smart and ambitious, a magazine publisher. It’s a wedding for a magazine or for a celebrity: the designer dress, the remote location, the luxe party favors, the boutique whiskey. The cell phone service may be spotty and the waves may be rough, but every detail has been expertly planned and will be expertly executed.

But eventually I couldn’t put it down. A menagerie of characters and a closed island mystery that has a very sad disturbing backstory. A modern nod to Agatha Christie.

Historia
Augustus Everett is an acclaimed author of literary fiction. January Andrews writes best-selling romance. When she pens a happily ever after, he kills off his entire cast. They’re polar opposites. In fact, the only thing they have in common is that for the next three months, they're living in neighboring beach houses, broke, and bogged down with writer's block.

I started reading this years ago but put it down, but something about Tremblay’s narration kept me going this time and I’m so glad it did. I couldn’t put the books down - I listed all day every day. A fantastic and thought-provoking escape from the world typical of the fabulous Neal Shusterman.

Historia
In the highly anticipated finale to the New York Times best-selling trilogy, dictators, prophets, and tensions rise. In a world that’s conquered death, will humanity finally be torn asunder by the immortal beings it created? Citra and Rowan have disappeared. Endura is gone. It seems like nothing stands between Scythe Goddard and absolute dominion over the world scythedom. With the silence of the Thunderhead and the reverberations of the Great Resonance still shaking the earth to its core, the question remains: Is there anyone left who can stop him?
