Historia
William James propounded his theories of pragmatism in this book. He emphasized "radical empiricism" and the concept that the meaning of any idea - philosophical, political, social, or otherwise - only has validity in terms of its experiential and practical consequences. He wished to test competing systems of thought in the "marketplace of actual experience" to determine whether adopting a particular philosophical theory or way of looking at the world makes an actual difference in individual conduct or in how people perceive and react to the varieties of experience.

Great ideas, bad reading
Revisado: 06-23-22
You could tell that the reader had never read these words before and didn’t understand what he was saying. His emphasis was all over the place. Pronunciation was sometimes off. It ended up deadening the overall lectures and turning this into a bit of a slog.

Historia
All great leaders, thinkers, artists, athletes, and visionaries share one indelible quality. It enables them to conquer their tempers. To avoid distraction and discover great insights. To achieve happiness and do the right thing. Ryan Holiday calls it stillness - to be steady while the world spins around you. In this book, he outlines a path for achieving this ancient, but urgently necessary way of living.

Great Message, Poor Reading
Revisado: 01-18-20
Not sure why the author read this himself. He sounds like a teenager reading a report in front of the class. Earnest, self-serious, full of long, unnecessary pauses.
But the content itself is great and the narration, in my opinion, didn't detract from that too much.

More lore than story
Revisado: 02-16-19
The way it’s written, the lack of memorable characters, the rote roles everyone seems to be playing, all of it feels more like an extended epilogue to the original four than a story in and of itself. So much piece setting too. It’s not even a full story.

Historia
Swann’s Way is the first of seven volumes in Remembrance of Things Past. It sets the scene with the narrator’s memories being famously provoked by the taste of that little cake, the madeleine, accompanied by a cup of lime-flowered tea. It is an unmatched portrait of fin-de-siècle France.

Story like listening to your grandma ramble
Revisado: 08-06-18
I understand that Proust is supposed to be a genius and that this book is a milestone of modernism, but it's not super enjoyable to listen to. It's a lot like hearing someone ramble on and get sidetracked while trying to tell a mediocre anecdote. But the performance is fine and there are some fine moments amid the droning.

Shredder is pretty monotone
Revisado: 07-25-17
The story was solid. The writing of the story was even better. But the performance was just bad. This is the guy who plays shredder in TMNT 2 Secret of the Ooze. And although he made a fine villain he does not make a good narrator. Not much inflection nor differentiation from character to character. And that occasionally gets confusing.

Pacing rough. Otherwise great.

The beginning is a bit plodding. The end is a bit sermonizing. In between though are rich characters and a very interesting plot.

Great story okay performance

Honestly there were some points when the reading was very touching. But most of the time he made the characters sound more annoying than I interpreted them as being.

Good story, sometimes uninspired reading
Revisado: 12-27-16
Every reading is an interpretation in a way. This reading strove very hard for a long time to avoid any interpretation. She does a fine job with the accents but can't seem to get into the emotional state of the protagonist. What it ends up being is overly cheery and overly enunciated, as though it were being read to children.
But the story itself is engrossing.
