I genuinely like this series, from a retired soldier with PTSD and they/them pronouns to a well meaning British lady with a stiff upper lip and, of course, the grumpy Scot, the characters make this book enjoyable. What this book lacks when compared to its predecessor is pacing. Halfway through the book it seems to lose its plot and you feel stuck in exposition. The climax arrives much like emptying a bottle of ketchup- slowly, and then all at once. I didn’t realize I was nearing the end of the book until it was over and I felt somewhat letdown. What Moves at Night’s exposition and pacing was better than this novel, and if there are any subsequent sequels, I hope the pacing improves. As always, this narrator leaves something to be desired but the story is interesting enough that I was able to look past it. Four stars

Books this immersive and rich are rare.

Borrowing from legends, folktales, and myths, Abdullah weaves a tale of intrigue, suspense, surprises, and mystery. Morally gray characters enhance the story and are as infuriating as they are compelling.

With its female protagonist, Stardust Thief is a satisfying blend of Harry Potter, The Da Vinci Code, and 1001 Arabian Nights.

It’s my new favorite book and with luck, the sequel due in 2025 will be just as good and worth the wait.

I wanted to like this book, really I did. The premise is interesting but the execution really fell flat. Of course the girl sentenced to no longer be able to speak was an absolute chatterbox before she got in trouble. Of course the girl who was hungry would be sentenced to eating for the rest of her life. Explain to me how someone could come up with such an interesting idea for a book and then fall into storyline tropes. I don’t understand.

The narrator is about as interesting as watching water boil. She would probably be great at narrating podcasts to put you to sleep. If your character is a teenage girl, could you put some inflection in your voice?

I have a physical copy of this book so I jumped to the ending, figured out what happened, and put this book on my DNF list.

This book was such a creative breath of fresh air. I truly enjoyed the jumping timeline, puzzling nature of the character interaction, and the setup altogether. The story was trending in one direction and then ended as some sort of fairy tale Happily Ever After where (SPOILERS) no one loses, no one dies, the circus is saved, and everything carries on. It doesn’t feel like it was the original plan for the book. Did the author change her mind without a solid plan? Was it an editors decision to open the possibility for sequels? It felt forced, contrived, and really didn’t fit the pattern of the story.

Jim Dale, as ever, was a treat. 10/10 for him. He makes the novel that much better!

Lovely book and great plot, but there is a rape. I wasn't expecting it and really struggled with the rest of the story. In all of my time reading historical romances, the threat of rape is real but never before was the act carried out. Be aware if you're sensitive to that sort of thing.

I also personally dislike male narrators for romance novels. I skipped over the explicit material in this book and its predecessor. It makes me uncomfortable, simply not my thing.
