Historia
Cyrus Shams is a young man grappling with an inheritance of violence and loss: his mother’s plane was shot down over the skies of the Persian Gulf in a senseless accident; and his father’s life in America was circumscribed by his work killing chickens at a factory farm in the Midwest.

Disappointed
Revisado: 09-26-24
I’ve loved this author’s previous books so set the bar a bit high. I found this book to be a painful. The characters were unlikable and the story lacked substance. There was no suspense as suggested in the description. It was a chore to get through. Hoping for a return back to the humor and interesting stories typical of this author in the next book!

Historia
When Marilyn Kleinman is caught making out with the rabbi’s son in front of the whole congregation, her parents ship her off to her great-aunt Ada for the summer. If anyone can save their daughter’s reputation, it’s Philadelphia’s strict premier matchmaker. Either that or Marilyn can kiss college goodbye. To Marilyn’s surprise, Ada’s not the humorless septuagenarian her mother described. Not with that platinum-blonde hair, Hermès scarf, and Cadillac convertible. She’s sharp, straight-talking, takes her job very seriously, and abides by her own rules…mostly.

Really enjoyed this story - filled the hole in my heart that Marvelous Mrs. Maisel left when it ended. Narrator was great, but there were all of these weird pauses in between lines - not sure if it was the reading itself or editing (I initially assumed editing, but there were SO many). Great light listen!

Liked a lot but left hanging
Revisado: 10-02-23
I really enjoyed listening to this book and learned about some important historical aspects. My only critique was that the ending left most of the storylines very open-ended, so there was really no resolution or feeling that the book was “done” - it just kind of dropped off. Hope that there will be a sequel!

Cute book, fun characters, but nothing earth shattering. Light, would have liked a little more development at the end. Enjoyed listening, but not the kind of book I was scrambling to put on every time I had a few free minutes.

Such a Good Read
Revisado: 09-01-23
I REALLY enjoyed this book start to end. I was almost deterred by reviews saying this was a “man-hating” book and am so glad I decided to go for it anyway - whoever wrote those is either part of the problem or living in an alternate universe. It is a novel about empowering women within the context of a murder mystery - sure, many/most of the male characters were examples of deplorable, sexist men, but I mean it’s a fictional work written to convey strong (important/accurate) messaging. Managed to cover serious topics and plot lines with quite a bit of levity. Highly recommend!

Disappointed
Revisado: 08-01-23
Was excited to see this book described as “light and feel good” - I did NOT find it to be either of these things. Maybe it was because I have a 2 year-old daughter, but listening to a book about a bunch of (mostly) self-centered adults deciding a little girl’s fate after the trauma of losing her mother without any regard for her best interest was stressful. I couldn’t wait for the book to be over. I found half of the characters very unrelatable, especially the one going through infertility (which I also experienced). The dialogue with the little girl was not consistent with a 3 year-old developmentally. Not my cup of tea, unfortunately.

William Waters grew up in a house silenced by tragedy, where his parents could hardly bear to look at him, much less love him—so when he meets the spirited and ambitious Julia Padavano in his freshman year of college, it’s as if the world has lit up around him. With Julia comes her family, as she and her three sisters are inseparable: Sylvie, the family’s dreamer, is happiest with her nose in a book; Cecelia is a free-spirited artist; and Emeline patiently takes care of them all.

Pretty Good Story
Revisado: 06-15-23
Was a bit underwhelmed by this one. Narration really threw me off - intonation and tone did not match the content, and I actually tried (unsuccessfully) to return it shortly after starting. Finally got used to it and was able to enjoy the story, though the ending left something to be desired.
