A complete crime fiction box set! Homicide detective Thomas Prescott may be retired—but a serial killer, a high-profile murder, an ill-fated cruise, and a chilling small-town crime add more than enough excitement to his hard-earned rest. This collection includes the first four books: Unforeseen, Gray Matter, The Afrikaans, and Show Me.

No thank you.

I pushed through the feeling that I wouldn't be able to finish it. The narrator was good. He was straight-forward, not overly anything. I would listen to his narration again. He sounds real, not like the booming reader guy voice. Otherwise, this book is chock full of sexism (hotter chicks in first-class), racism (I ate at Panda Express and seeing the Asian woman at the grill let me know my food would be good), asshole machismo (throughout, like every couple minutes). I listened for a few hours but by that point I was over it. If this is supposed to be a realistic way that white men or maybe men in general view the world, I am not surprised by how some things are going in the world. Maybe it gets better the more you listen but I will never know. I only bought this because of the running time and all the stars but it was a mistake. I'm going to see if Audible will take this book from my library and credit my account. I also want to say, I'm not a prude, I'm not easily offended in general but the protagonist just comes off as very unlikeable. I realize that may be intentional but it's totally disconcerting and in the end that's just not my jam man.

Historia
War of the Worlds by Herbert George Wells (H.G. Wells) was published in 1898 at a time when he wrote a series of novels related to a number of historical events of the time. The most important of these was the unification and militarization of Germany. The story, written in a semi-documentary style, is told in the first person by an unnamed observer. It tells of the events, which happen mostly in London and the county of Surrey, England, when a number of vessels manned by aliens are fired from Mars and land on Earth.

Surprising!

I was so excited to get this classic at such a cheap price, I did not follow my general rule of first reading over the reviews and listening to the sample. Had I read those reviews I would've known about the narration issues. Thankfully the last group of chapters were read well. Thanks for that. I didn't start keeping track of the worst chapters until chapter 9. So IMO chapters 9,11,12,18 had awful narration. Chapter 18 was unbelievably bad almost like a joke. In the end, the book is good, I paid for it, I finished it. I will never again bypass reading reviews and listening to the excerpt no matter how good the deal seems to me in the time.

Historia
Late Victorian London. When James Miller, the most respectable of Scottish businessmen, is pulled, dead, from the Thames, his daughter is drawn into an investigation which reveals a whole world of secrets and corruption. Alongside local detective Culley, Catriona’s search for her father’s killer leads all the way to the tragic truth behind the ghostly legend of The Darkwater Bride and the power of her deadly kiss. The Darkwater Bride combines the genres of the Victorian mystery thriller with the equally classic Victorian mode of the ghostly tale.

Didn't get very far..

The daughter became increasingly annoying. I really made the effort to continue in hopes that I would become so interested in the story that she would stop being annoying. But to hear her repeatedly say, "..what? My father? What are you saying? What are you preparing me for?..""..um, yes I, I..""..no that can't be my father it can't!" Like girl please. I am unsure what exactly I dislike more, the woman's acting or the terrible dialogue. If those ums and I can'ts were written to be performed like that, then it's definitely both. The male actors were fine. They played their parts well. I'm sure both the actress and author are usually great, maybe things just didn't mesh well this time. Idk. Thanks.

Hooked
Revisado: 04-09-19
I started listening and could not stop. I was all in from the beginning. This book is filed with love, betrayal, deception, battles, and honestly most importantly color. The use of color as an ability, a strength, a magical weapon made everything so visual for me. In my mind's eye, as they say, I could see the green shoot from a drafter's hands. I could see Gavin creating the yellow wall. My imagination was awakened. I was also invested in the characters. Their histories, connections, personalities. I filled my free time listening, I was engrossed in the story. The narrator was perfect. I didn't know it was a series so I wasn't planning for it to have a kind of open ending like the Hobbit or Avengers movies where you're totally set up for the next one. I was down to the last chapter wondering how everything could be nicely ended in such a short amount of time. It couldn't. I never choose series because I want a conclusion but I guess I will at least listen to the next story. I want to know if the real Gavin escapes and if Liv realizes she's on the wrong side. If Karris chooses the real Gavin. If she even gets a choice since The Prism is dying. What will Ironfist, Kip, Corvin, Gavin's devotees, what will everyone do when the truth is known? I guess you can say I'm still invested.
