I was hooked on Helena's story from the beginning. This is truly a tale in which there is clearly a villain but we are forced to see him from the perspective of his adoring daughter. I wanted to see that man's comeuppance from the get go, but Helena builds a world in which he is a good father and she looks up to him. The tragic undertone is that she does not know he is abusive to both her and her mother because she has been indoctrinated to think this is how things should be. That is the worst part of this book stomaching the fact that she was raised by a psychopath that taught her taking women against their will is the "way" her ancestors got wives.

I wish however that we spent some time on Helena's present life more than in her past, as we didn't get enough of her journey after she left her life in the marsh. It is also sad that Helena didn't seem to care for her mother and what she went through, which is why I could not entirely relate to her as a person.

Great story overall!

I really enjoyed listening to this story. I found myself screaming a couple of times as the story developed. There are no mustache twirling villains here, and the characters felt very real, even the "Well-meaning" misguided ones. I absolutely loved Emira and the relationship she had with her best friend, their interactions were hilarious sometimes, it made really miss my best friend. Light on social commentary as it doesn't beat you over the head with it, but it still represents a reality only people of color can attest to.

Lovely Story Set in a very dark period of history

I can not adequately express how much I loved this book. The narrator is what makes this book less a story about a girl growing up in Nazi Germany and more about the twists and turns we encounter through life. It's a depressing time, but the characters are not gloomy and are luminous instead. The omnipresent narrator is its own character with emotions and perspectives that only the readers have access to. While he does not directly interact with the characters, he is still present in their lives. Only great books can manage to present a story during a very dark age in a way that makes us more interested in the characters' needs and inner lives rather than their circumstances.

An Old Classic Takes a New Meaning

I tried to read it years ago. Perhaps I was too young to appreciate it because I thought it was a bore. Now, with a couple more years and lived experiences under my belt, the book took on a new meaning and really made me realize how much life changes your perspective on things.

Fitzgerald is not an easy read by any means because he uses the English language so adeptly. He describes mundane things in such a way that it makes you feel like an illiterate peasant for not ever thinking of describing the world in such a manner. It made me jealous at times not to possess that ability to convey feelings so vividly.

I am now a fan of Fitzgerald, and I'm looking to revisit his other works with less trepidation.

I really like Andy Weir's story telling style, combining science with fiction is no easy feat and he always manages to not only make it sound possible but also entertaining. I didn't think I would find myself crying over a story with no basis in reality, but the humanity he put into the characters, even those that weren't human was impossible not to identify with.

I particularly enjoyed the "what if" scenario of encountering life forms that evolved in a completely different atmosphere and ecology, with different senses and biochemistry. It was a treat to imagine what it would be like to learn to communicate with alien forms that do not use the same form of communication as us.

Although I would have preferred for all to tie up nicely at the end and for the protagonist to return to earth a hero, but we got a great ending nonetheless and ended up a hero for 2 worlds.

Great and bittersweet ending to a beloved series

No spoilers.
I absolutely fell in-love with the story and it's characters from the start. The first book was enthralling, the second felt unfinished, but this last one gave us everything we wish every book that left us in the cold would provide, a glimpse into the furure to see what happened to our beloved characters. Obviously, like in real life, not everyone gets the ending we hoped for, but we get closure. I also love that Fredrick went back to what made me love these series, which is the spirit of the town and the ordinary lives of the extraordinary people who live in it. We not only get to understand the idiosyncrasies of Beartown , but that of Hed, and why Hockey is more than a sport there. A great story with endearing characters we can identify with.

It is very difficult to write a memoir that does not attempt to gloss over the author's flaws, their darkest thoughts , and deepest secrets. In this book Jeannette McCurdy lays it all bare in each chapter of the book. Perhaps this is why so many are connecting with it.

Despite the title of the book and the abuse she suffered in her childhood at the hands of her deeply narcissistic mother, she does not hate her or is actually glad she is dead. She is deeply aware of how much her mother hurt her, but cannot stop missing her and trying to forgive her for it. I am not sure if Jeannette is ok, but I hope she finds peace and purpose.

I am already invested in the story and this was an easy listen for me. I have been rooting for Benji, Maya, Ahmed, and Ana since the first book. While some of the stories were tied up, I feel something is missing from this book, as if the author left it open for a third book. Because of this choice, the book feels unfinished, and we do not get a completely satisfying ending that tells us these characters will be alright, especially Maya and Benji.

This book was a perfect candidate for audible narration. the omniscient narrator of Dune is essential to understanding the characters motives and inner thoughts. The voice actors were also great and unlike many other audible books, their distinct voices allow you to fully grasp which character dialogue we are listening to at any point.

I had never read Dune or knew anything about its lore. I was introduced to it via the 2021 movie. I never saw the 80s version either. I am so glad I decided to pick up the book. It is such a great story and now I have more context for the events in the movie. I am farther ahead than the movie story wise, but I feel that this way its better as the experience of seeing these characters come to life onscreen is enhanced by understanding their motives and why things happen a certain way.

I thoroughly enjoyed Frank Herbert's style of writing. I can also appreciate the way he created this world by borrowing from many cultural traditions from different parts of the world. The depiction of the Fremen and their customs has many middle eastern cultural aspects intermixed, while the Harkkonens are a mixture of Roman empire in the era of gladiators, as well as Middle age European feudal society.

it's a very enjoyable read and didn't feel long or a chore to listen to it. I do feel that a graphical depiction of the worlds, Arrakes, Calladan, and the great houses is in order.

I can't say enough how much I loved this audiobook. The performance of the voice actor brought the character to life and enriched the already superb writing and storytelling style of Amor Towles. The backdrop of the story is a recent post-bolshevik revolution Russia, which we experience through Count Rostov's point of view. He is sentenced by a Bolshevik tribunal to house arrest inside a hotel in the center of Moscow, and if he leaves, he can be shot to death. Multiple characters come and go, hotel visitors and staff. Through all of it we see the change happening outside the hotel walls. The richness of language, descriptive details immerse you in the Count's world, and by the end of the book you fully love this character and wish he was real, and to have that kind of wisdom.

I have been impatiently waiting for the movie rumored to star Kenneth Branagh, in the meantime I'm consoling myself with a re-read.
