Bridging the gap between the world of science and the realm of the spiritual, Wallace, a pioneer of modern consciousness research, offers a practical and revolutionary method for exploring the mind that combines the keenest insights of contemporary physics and philosophers with the time-honored meditative traditions of Buddhism.

A Sheep in Wolf's Clothes
Revisado: 02-02-11
There are some interesting points raised by the book, but I never could get past the fact the author thought Duckbill Platypuses were extinct. Anyway the book is written in very academic prose with a dry narration. Not good for listening if you are driving. I also couldn't equate Plato's ideal forms and quantum mechanics, but again I could have missed something while commuting. There were times that I felt I was listening to John Twelve Hawks' The Traveler and other times that it was a religious tract for Buddhism. Bottom line the book started out well and then got into a how to on Buddhism meditation. If that's your thing, go for it. Otherwise approach cautiously

To err is human. Yet most of us go through life assuming (and sometimes insisting) that we are right about nearly everything, from the origins of the universe to how to load the dishwasher. If being wrong is so natural, why are we all so bad at imagining that our beliefs could be mistaken, and why do we react to our errors with surprise, denial, defensiveness, and shame?

Who knew
Revisado: 12-10-10
Who knew there was so much to being wrong? it's not a bad book and not a collection of wrong actions, although there is some of that. It is a thesis on being wrong and points out some aspects of being wrong that I never considered. All in all, not bad.

Historia
In 1871, an entire fleet of whaling ships was caught in an arctic ice storm and destroyed. Though few lives were lost, the damage would forever shape one of America's most distinctive commodities: oil. New Bedford, Massachusetts, was fertile ground for this country's first multimillion-dollar industry. Founded by assiduous Quaker merchants seeking refuge for their austere religion, the town also lent unparalleled access to the high seas.

Approach with caution
Revisado: 09-03-10
The author tends to stray from the subject of the book. I understand that he is trying to place the circumstances surrounding the whaling industry into prospective, but I found the tangents distracting and took up too much of the book. I did not need to know about the rise of Quakers in New England nor the beginning of the petroleum industry in Pennsylvania. I would have preferred concentrating more on the whaling ships and their plight.

A good historic prespective
Revisado: 06-13-10
I found the book a little dated (in was written in the 70s and an afterword in 93). It isn't bad as a narrative of the thinking at the time, although as an audio book I found the equations and the math hard to follow.
