Historia
The modern audience hasn't had a chance to truly appreciate the unknowing dread that readers would have felt when reading Bram Stoker's original 1897 manuscript. Most modern productions employ campiness or sound effects to try to bring back that gothic tension, but we've tried something different. By returning to Stoker's original storytelling structure - a series of letters and journal entries voiced by Jonathan Harker, Dr. Van Helsing, and other characters - with an all-star cast of narrators, we've sought to recapture its originally intended horror and power.

I liked it all! Brought current a very old book. I don’t know what else to say. Am I almost at fifteen words?

Historia
Ashley Perrin is fresh out of college and starting a job as a community liaison for the Third District–the city’s only sector with more alien residents than humans. Ashley’s barely found where the paper clips are kept when she’s beset with constituent complaints–from too much noise at the Annual Lupidian Celebration Parade to a trip-and-fall chicken to a very particular type of alien hornet that threatens the very city itself. And if that’s not terrifying enough, Ashley is next up at the office karaoke night.

Irritating
Revisado: 11-17-24
The fake Eastern European accent was irritating. The characters were stereotypical - I suppose stereotypes need to come from somewhere. I am really surprised by how many awards this book won.

Historia
Even through the roar and effervescence of the 1920s, everyone in New York has heard of Benjamin and Helen Rask. He is a legendary Wall Street tycoon; she is the daughter of eccentric aristocrats. Together, they have risen to the very top of a world of seemingly endless wealth—all as a decade of excess and speculation draws to an end. But at what cost have they acquired their immense fortune? This is the mystery at the center of Bonds, a successful 1937 novel that all of New York seems to have read. Yet there are other versions of this tale of privilege and deceit.

It was kind of dumb. After listening to it, the overall point of the book seemed to be that each individual and each aspect of historical documentation has its own bias, and potentially completely false narration.

Historia
The ancient magic of wizards was anything but dark. It was the enlightenment that lifted humanity from the squalor of superstition, and the worship of fell spirits and capricious gods, but those days are gone. The shining glory of the sorcerers burned away the subtlety of wisdom, replacing it with easy power, held only in the hands of the elite - a new age built upon the elemental supremacy of aristocrats and the ignorance of the masses.

Give Amed Salem a metal!
Revisado: 08-30-24
I’m so glad I listened to this. With all the terrorism and anti-American and anti-Islam sentiment in modern society, this made me feel really really good. Amed Salem and his family have made a huge sacrifice for American society. It was a FASCINATING plot about the WTC bombing in 1993 and the prevention of another terrier attack. We can thank the FBI, but ESPECIALLY this man and his family for the prevention of a huge terrorist
attack. I especially liked the part where he said they were all praying - and he was praying for God to give him wisdom. And when he commented on their prayers, he said. “There is something wrong with them in the head. Two very different types of prayers.”
This was a wonderful acknowledgment that there are people who have made incredible sacrifices for our country, however, they are often not able to be recognized. Thank you Amed and family!

Early True Believers: The Untold Story of Silicon Alley is a 1990s saga of ambition and innovation set in Manhattan’s Silicon Alley, a swath of downtown that served as New York City’s nerve center of tech entrepreneurship. The series features the stories of a forgotten cohort of early internet visionaries, countercultural social networks, the digital gold rush, and the lavish events that came with it, including one held in an underground Tribeca bunker that abruptly ended in a police raid—a harbinger of the upheaval to come.

Fascinating - for those of us who know nothing about China!
Revisado: 08-11-24
Wow! This book is an entertaining and terrifying look at China. Recently, in Florida, an adult woman told me that “China is similar to the US - just an Asian version.” I, of course, disagreed with her, but that was before listening to this book. Now, not only do I disagree with her, but now, after listening to this book, not only do I disagree with her, but I am horrified by how little Americans know about China’s Government policies. Also, I am horrified by the degree of pollution described.
The book was funny and witty in the authors social commentary sort of way.
At a point, I was slightly suspicious that perhaps the author had a negatively bias view on China. So I did research some of his observations. I was disturbed to discover his facts in regard to everything I questioned were accurate. California IS affected by China’s pollution, the air quality IS below standards in the majority of Chinese cities, AND they have been harvesting prisoners’ organs. There were many other revelations that I was astounded by - although I’m not sure why. I am of the age where I remember watching the Tiananmen Square Massacre on the nightly news as a kid. I suppose I had assumed the Chinese government policies would have become more *civilized* or even vaguely more humane. This book was quite a wake-up call.
The narrator is wonderful. I have purchased books he narrates just because he chooses excellent books and he has a great voice.

This Is Not a Game is the extraordinary untold story of the internet’s first conspiracy theory, the legend of Ong’s Hat. Marc Fennell will dive deep into a previously unexplored world of tech hippies, eccentric web subcultures and simmering paranoia, uncovering how this tongue-in-cheek artistic experiment backfired on its creator and went on to influence much of what’s wrong with the internet today.

Interesting recap of the early internet days
Revisado: 07-19-24
I liked the different individuals’ perspectives of the early days of the Internet. I liked the diverse backgrounds of the interviewees. It delved into the psychology of conspiracy theories- and why people might be inclined to believe in the New Jersey Devil or any American Tall Tales. The story was engaging - significantly more involved than just the origin story of Ong’s Hat. It ended on an optimistic, hopeful note in regards to the future of the internet. However, the optimism seemed like a rushed end-of-story wrap up. Difficult to jump from the insanity of Online Q-non conspiracy theorists to the belief that the next generation internet will be a major improvement. It does seem that conspiracies seem to be growing - not shrinking.
Regardless, it was definitely an interesting listen and I’m glad I spent my time on it.
