Historia
From the once-popular yet unfairly neglected Victorian writer Charlotte Riddell comes a pair of novels that cleverly upholster the familiar furniture of the haunted house story. In An Uninhabited House, the hauntings are seen through the perspective of the solicitors who hold the deed of the property. In Fairy Water, Riddell again subverts the expectations of the audience, suggesting a complex moral character for her haunting spirit.

Wonderful books spoiled by poor narration
Revisado: 09-11-24
No one surpassed Charlotte Riddell in creating ghost stories. She was a benchmark writer in the genre. The two stories collected in this book represent her high quality work. It would be good to pick-up a hard copy rather than spend time on this audiobook. The narrator gives, what I can only assume was, an attempt at a lofty, erudite voice. I don't know who it was in the production of this recording thought that was a good idea. It totally fails. The performance comes off sounding haughty, overbearing and pretentious. The end result is unlistenable.

Christopher Glyn gives a superb reading

Masterful reading, diminished only by intrusive and distracting musical interludes added to the gospel chapters.

Historia
FNH Audio presents an unabridged reading of H. P. Lovecraft's The Dunwhich Horror. Lavina Whateley has birthed an abomination, and now it's got free. First one family and then another are wiped off the face of the Earth, and this is just the beginning of the plan. Dr. Armitage, the Librarian at Miskatonic University, is scared. He's pieced together the clues and has a dreadful inkling of what is abroad. This ageing doctor may be the world's only hope.

The sound of Lovecraft
Revisado: 04-16-16
Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?
H.P Lovecraft, like M.R. James before him and Ramsey Campbell after, was a master of reticence. He revealed just enough to tell his story and achieve his effect but no more. I think this is why people have struggled to translate his work into other media. I can think of no movie or audio play that creates the same feeling as reading the stories.
I've heard very few readings that capture the mood and essence of the tales either. But this independent (and inexpensive) production achieves it. Mr. Herriott's voice, accent and delivery are perfectly suited to the material. To my ear, this sounds like Lovecraft.
