Historia
A year ago Sophie Wickham stumbled into the isolated Lancashire village of Withered Hill, naked, alone and with no memory of who she is. Surrounded by a thick ring of woodland, its inhabitants seem to be of another world, drenched in pagan, folklorish traditions. As Sophie struggles to regain the memories of her life from before, she quickly realises she is a prisoner after multiple failed escape attempts. But is it the locals who keep her trapped, with smiles on their faces, or something else, lurking in the woods?

A very satisfying puzzle
Revisado: 04-20-25
This was a really interesting and satisfying read. If you thought the people of Summers Isle were the real heroes of The Wicker Man (the original, not the asinine remake), you’ll enjoy this!

Historia
In this eloquent and persuasive book, Neil Postman examines the deep and broad effects of television culture on the manner in which we conduct our public affairs, and how "entertainment values" have corrupted the very way we think. As politics, news, religion, education, and commerce are given less and less expression in the form of the printed word, they are rapidly being reshaped to suit the requirements of television.

It’s too bad people didn’t listen to this man
Revisado: 11-15-24
It’s fascinating to listen to this, knowing how much worse everything has gotten in the decades since it was written. Postman really nailed how the media has affected our ability to focus and use discernment. He’s right about Brave New World, but I’d add Fahrenheit 451 to it, that book really predicted a lot of what’s going on now.
My only complaint about the performance is that it was entirely too fast (ironic considering the topic), I had to slow it down to 0.8 speed to listen to it.

Exactly what I needed
Revisado: 02-11-21
I’ve been wanting to spend less time on social media for a long time and for many reasons. This book has been very helpful in giving me the reasons, methods and encouragement I needed to finally break my social media addiction and spend my time on more fulfilling pursuits.

Historia
Jack Torrance's new job at the Overlook Hotel is the perfect chance for a fresh start. As the off-season caretaker at the atmospheric old hotel, he'll have plenty of time to spend reconnecting with his family and working on his writing. But as the harsh winter weather sets in, the idyllic location feels ever more remote...and more sinister. And the only one to notice the strange and terrible forces gathering around the Overlook is Danny Torrance, a uniquely gifted five-year-old.

Scarily addictive
Revisado: 12-08-20
I don’t usually read horror, but I couldn’t stop listening to this all the way to the end. There’s a lot more to the story than I expected, and I will definitely listen to it again. I disagree with the reviews that didn’t like Campbell Scott’s performance- for a horror story, I think a calm, quiet voice is better than a melodramatic one, and his performance of the different characters was excellent.
