Historia
In 1866, with the country barely recovered from the Civil War, new war breaks out on the western frontier - a clash of cultures between a young, ambitious nation and the Native tribes who have lived on the land for centuries. Colonel Henry Carrington arrives in Wyoming’s Powder River Valley to lead the US Army in defending the opening of a new road for gold miners and settlers. Carrington intends to build a fort in the middle of critical hunting grounds, the home of the Lakota.

Brings Red Cloud’s War to Life!
Revisado: 07-01-23
As an artist, I’ve depicted the Fetterman Fight, primarily based on Dee Brown’s book about Fort Phil Kearny . But Punte’s excellent book serves to flesh out the players-both Indian and cavalry-and events leading up to the Fetterman Fight. If you know little about these events, this book will lead you to other excellent histories: many of which, the author himself suggests in the afterword.

Historia
Pickett's Charge is a detailed analysis of one of the most iconic and defining events in American history. This book presents a much-needed fresh look, including the unvarnished truths and ugly realities, about the unforgettable story. With the luxury of hindsight, historians have long denounced the folly of Lee's attack, but this work reveals the tactical brilliance of a master plan that went awry. Special emphasis is placed on the common soldiers on both sides, especially the non-Virginia attackers outside of Pickett's Virginia Division.

Worst CW book ever. Can't rate it low enough. It deserves negative 5 stars in all categories

Up close and personal at the Bloody Angle!
Revisado: 12-22-22
The writer’s main premise-That Lee’s plan for Pickett’s attack on the third day of Gettysburg could, and should have succeeded; is defended throughout the book, but it doesn’t get in the way of some of the most detailed experience of what it was like to be part of the “high water mark of the Confederacy”. Using letters, diaries and recollections of some of the men involved, you find yourself in the ranks of the doomed charge-doomed, because JEB Stuart’s planned cavalry charge from the Union rear never materialized, and doomed because Longstreet and AP Hill did not communicate well, and failed to send reinforcements when the battle-indeed the fate of the Confederacy-was on the line! The narrator does a fine job as well. Very poignant experience if you’ve ever crossed that field headed towards the copse of trees at the Bloody Angle.

Historia
James Marsh's Four Years in the Rockies gives brilliant insight into the life of Isaac P. Rose, a man who forged his own path in the wilderness of the far west. This thrilling account of one mountain man's life at the height of the 19th-century fur industry follows Rose as he overcomes adversity, learns from those around him, and becomes one of the most successful trappers of the Rockies. Four Years in the Rockies is essential listening for anyone interested in the 19th-century fur trade and the adventurers who risked their lives to be part of it.

A Long-forgotten memoir of a young mountain man
Revisado: 03-26-22
I found the story of Isaac Rose fascinating. He and another teenager travel to the home of the Blackfeet and the Crow, in search of beaver pelts. The become camp hands for a group of trappers led by Jim Bridget ; and including a young hunter named Kit Carson. Young Rose and his friend’s skill with a gun soon elevate the men to true trapper status. Rose has many amazing adventures, fighting hostile, celebrating his 20th birthday at the annual mountain man rendezvous, and even being captured and adopted into the Crow tribe. Although the narrator occasionally sounds like Gabby Hayes as he tackles the unique accents of the mountain men, I found it sorta charming and fit well with the 19th Century style of narration. All in all, this is a great (and probably mostly true) adventure of a young man in the mid-1830’s.

Historia
Death in Florence illuminates one of the defining moments in Western history - the bloody and dramatic story of the battle for the soul of Renaissance Florence. By the end of the fifteenth century, Florence was well established as the home of the Renaissance. In an exhilaratingly rich and deeply researched story, Paul Strathern reveals the paradoxes, self-doubts, and political compromises that made the battle for the soul of the Renaissance city one of the most complex and important moments in Western history.

Savonarola Comes To Life
Revisado: 10-23-21
I thought I knew the story of Savonarola and the Bonfire of the Vanities; but Death in Florence fleshes out one of the Renaissance’s most mysterious personalities. I learned so much about Florence at the end of the reign of Lorenzo the Magnificent, and the relationship between the two men. The Ordeal by Fire, that marked the beginning of the end for Savonarola, and the siege of his monastery by a Florentine mob, are incredible moments of rarely-shared history!

Historia
"The Lottery," one of the most terrifying stories of the twentieth century, created a sensation when it was first published in the New Yorker. "Powerful and haunting," and "nights of unrest" were typical reader responses. This collection, the only one to appear during Jackson's lifetime, unites "The Lottery" with 24 equally unusual stories. Together they demonstrate her remarkable range - from the hilarious to the truly horrible - and power as a storyteller.

Amazing Stories-not what I expected
Revisado: 04-28-21
This group of thought-provoking stories explores the lonely little lives of single women living in the seedier side of New York-or unhappily married women, or women who have moved to a rural setting...or maybe she just had a toothache! They are grouped together and the stories gradually grow more mysterious and unsettling. It saves the most powerful story, The Lottery, for the last! A great gathering of short stories.
