Steve Hoffman is a perfectly comfortable middle-aged Minnesotan man who has always been desperately, pretentiously in love with France, more specifically with the idea of France. To follow that love, he and his family move, nearly at random, to the small, rural, scratchy-hot village of Autignac in the south of the country, and he immediately thinks he’s made a terrible mistake.

Wonderful memoir, wonderfully read!

Starts off seeming a bit too earnest, until you realize that’s just the nature of the narrator, soon enough the listener gets pulled into his world. He writes beautifully and engagingly and at the end of each chapter you find yourself wanting to keep listening to just tone more. I wound listening to the entire book over the course of one day. He reads it beautifully as well. Wonderful memoir!

Overall, this was a wonderful production! The narrator occasionally made a few of the character seem slightly older than they are written, but the effect is only momentarily discordant. The strength of the writing and the characters and the humor was more than enough to keep it all thumping along at a great beat. The author’s distinct Left-of-Center bias was evident from the get-go, but it didn’t bother me at all and wasn’t remotely preachy. It helps that the author perfectly captures the disgusting and all too real dynamics of the American healthcare system. I’ve unfortunately spent enough time around hospitals and healthcare providers to know the basic veracity of the author’s characterizations. Those of a more Right-of-Center disposition should simply make allowances for the little bits of exaggeration and whatnot, because this is too good a book, and far too fun a read, to ignore.

A quirky but insightful and entertaining book.

The narration is a touch leaden at times, but the book is very good. The author has a somewhat absurdist sense of humor, but the unfolding story is compelling and insightful, capturing well many different aspects of the conflict.
