Historia
For Emily, accepting the proposal of Philip, the viscount Ashton, was an easy way to escape her overbearing mother, who was set on a grand society match. So when Emily's dashing husband died on safari soon after their wedding, she felt little grief. After all, she barely knew him. Now, nearly two years later, she discovers that Philip was a far different man from the one she had married so cavalierly.

Emily is Stupid, but has potential
Revisado: 03-27-25
I am not finished with the book yet, but unless I am mistaken, her faith and blindness towards her "dead" husband is ridiculous. Her antipathy towards Colin is unaccountable. She seems to trust the most obvious liars and dismiss any advice Colin gives. Her "interpretation" of the true story is not based on any fact, but pure feelings. I predict that her husband is really dead and the people she shouldn't trust are working hard to deceive her for financial gain. The book is all about feminine power, yet I'm sure Colin is going to have to save her from her stupidity. She seems a spoiled, entitled idiot, but I am intrigued with the story anyway.
update: It was a long, frustrating 'read', but the story takes a better turn and Emily is redeemed a bit in my eyes. To the point that I will likely read the second book.

Historia
When retired FBI Agent Patrick Henderson calls in an 'X-Ray Sierra India' incident, the operator doesn't understand. He tells them to pass it up the chain till someone does. That person is FBI Special Agent Kimberley Reynolds. Leaving Quantico for snowbound Northern Wisconsin, she finds that a tornado has flattened half the town—and there's no sign of Henderson. Things soon go from weird to worse, as neighbors report unsettling sightings, key evidence goes missing, and the snow keeps rising—cutting off the town, with no way in or out . . .

This is my favorite 'Rivers' story yet! Love the series, read through the entire quickly. I'm going to start again at the beginning, including stories separate from book form.

Revisado: 11-06-23
I am fascinated by Forensic Anthropology and am currently working on an anthropological degree. I really enjoyed the story and there was nothing about the forensic study that turned my stomach. However, what did turn my stomach, is the main character's, Dr. Bill Brocton's, attitude towards the women characters.
It is apparent from the beginning that he and a grad assistant, Miranda, have a close relationship, perhaps leaning towards more than friendship, but "professionalism" keeps things neutral.
It is mentioned ad nauseum, how much the doctor loves and misses his dead wife and his overwhelming guilt regarding her death.
In spite of this and his feelings towards Miranda, he has an office quickie with a young female student from one of his classes. This is gross enough, but Miranda sees and is "broken hearted". As another reviewer mentioned, he seems to think he is irresistible to women. Misogyny is an undertone throughout the novel.
Astonishingly, they all go on and work together, since the young female student is so bright and promising. YUCK, YUCK, YUCK!!!!
I would have like to get to know the characters a bit more before all the emotional crap was thrown at me. Too much, too soon. Sadly, I will not be learning more because my interest in the stories is ruined.
