Historia
In the American Civil War, or the War between the States, three dashing cavalry leaders - Stuart, Forrest, and Mosby - so captured the public imagination that their exploits took on a glamour, which we associate - as did the writers of the time - with the deeds of the Waverley characters and the heroes of chivalry. Of the three leaders, Colonel John S. Mosby (1833 - 1916), was, perhaps, the most romantic figure. In the South, his dashing exploits made him one of the great heroes of the "Lost Cause". In the North, he was painted as the blackest of redoubtable scoundrels.

The end was worth the beginning
Revisado: 09-04-23
I found the details of the war years to be specifical and lacking any real substance. However, the post war years I found to be insightful and enlightening as he goes through and explains his relationship with the various leaders from both sides. the humanity shown and respect given was quite refreshing

Historia
Early in May 1861, 21-year-old Sam R. Watkins of Columbia, Tennessee, joined the First Tennessee Regiment. He fought in all of its major battles, from Shiloh to Nashville. Twenty years later, with a "house full of young 'rebels' clustering around my knees and bumping about my elbows," he wrote the remarkable account of "Co. Aytch," its common foot soldiers, its commanders, its Yankee enemies, its victories and defeats, and its ultimate surrender on April 26, 1865.

it's very different than most civil war books
Revisado: 06-09-23
if you can get past the narrator and his constant lip popping the book is unique enough to recommend it.
first. b this is NOT an analysis of the various battles, political or tactics. Rather it's a collection of vignettes of a soldier from his personal experience.
3400 men started the war as part of the 1st Tennessee regiment to have only 64 return 4.5 years later. this book documents the loss of many of those men. some in target graphic detail.
this is a book to listen to when you want more civil war history, but are tied of the same ole same ole.

nothing you haven't heard about Lee before
Revisado: 05-22-23
this was written in 1955, so I suppose this is one of the original Lee books. it's fairly standard stuff regarding his prowess on the field in the face of superior forces.
the final few chapters had a bit more detail regarding the actual surrender and the moments and days after. Was it poetic license? maybe but it for well.
A number of people commented on the quality of the narrator. I want bothered by the narration as much as the poor recording quality from what sounds like over modulation.
Don't let that discourage you from giving this book a listen.

something's never change. including politicians
Revisado: 04-28-23
this book seems very well researched. the first 3rd of the book is the detail of the fire and it's spread. the second 3rd is the evaluation of the deviation and the huge outpouring of aid from around the world. the final 3rd is the politicians getting involved, accusations of corruption of the massive said sent to help the people who lost everything.
it ends with the reflection by experts, society and historians about what really happened.
the narration is top notch and brings you right to the edge of the fire.

full of detail but reads like a text book
Revisado: 04-08-23
the author clearly researched this topic extremely well. the execution of weaving all that research into a story leaves a but to be desired. the narration is casual. almost sounds like your uncle telling you a story of your grandfather.

At Will Durant's death at 96, in 1981, his personal papers were dispersed among relatives, collectors, and archive houses. Twenty years later, scholar John Little discovered the previously unknown manuscript of Heroes of History in Durant's granddaughter's garage. Written shortly before he died, these 21 essays serve as an abbreviated version of Durant's best-selling, 11-volume series, The Story of Civilization.

should be called heroes in before Christ
Revisado: 03-25-23
If you are well versed in history before Christ until about the 1600's you will like this book. For the rest of us I had little to no idea who these people were, much less how they were heros.
as always the highlight of this book was the narration by Grover Garner. His perfect diction even with the complicated names was what kept me interested.
not a book I will ever listen to again

Historia
In 1861, young Mark Twain found himself adrift as a tenderfoot in the Wild West. Roughing It is a hilarious record of his travels over a six-year period that comes to life with his inimitable mixture of reporting, social satire, and rollicking tall tales. Twain reflects on his scuffling years mining silver in Nevada, working at a Virginia City newspaper, being downandout in San Francisco, reporting for a newspaper from Hawaii, and more.

It's Mark Twain, need any American day more?
Revisado: 02-07-23
anyone American school aged child has read some work of Mark Twain. His talent is endless. His way with words is amazing. This work is a little different than his Twitter reading as a high school student, and maybe that's what makes it so entertaining. Roughing it through the American West, The Morning, Hawaii and the gold rush all play a prominent role in this book. he quickly ushers you from scene too scene in true Mark Twain style.
Grover Garner is the very best narrator in the audio book field and he once again proves that in his recitation of this book.

Historia
In the 30 years after the Civil War, the United States blew by Great Britain to become the greatest economic power in world history. That is a well-known period in history, when titans like Andrew Carnegie, John D. Rockefeller, and J. P. Morgan walked the earth. But as Charles R. Morris shows us, the platform for that spectacular growth spurt was built in the first half of the century. By the 1820s, America was already the world's most productive manufacturer and the most intensely commercialized society in history.

so close to a greatness
Revisado: 01-10-23
the author clearly did his research, but in the end o it just couldn't hold together. there is way more here about war than I expected or even found helpful to the story.
yet there are dishes of exactly what you wanted from this book with interesting history of various inventions.
all in all not what i had hoped for, but interesting none the less.

Historia
The engrossing, often scandalous saga of one of the wealthiest, longest-lasting, and most colorful family dynasties in the history of American commerce—a cautionary tale about prosperity, profligacy, hubris, and the blessings and dark consequences of success. This engrossing, vivid narrative captures the Busch saga through five generations. At the same time, it weaves a broader story of American progress and decline over the past 150 years. It's a cautionary tale of prosperity, hubris, and loss.

nepotism vs business. you get what you get
Revisado: 09-06-22
it's hard to believe an American empire so poorly managed by the very leaders/founders of the company.
by the time they got to the 4th generation AND GAVE him the reins the mold had been set for total capitalistic annihilation of one of America's pioneering companies.
money, fame, and family were no match for the trappings of big money.
