Exodus is an international publishing phenomenon - the towering novel of the 20th century's most dramatic geopolitical event. Leon Uris magnificently portrays the birth of a new nation in the midst of enemies - the beginning of an earthshaking struggle for power. Here is the tale that swept the world with its fury: the story of an American nurse, an Israeli freedom fighter caught up in a glorious, heartbreaking, triumphant era. Here is Exodus - one of the great best-selling novels of all time.

Brilliant story, brilliantly performed
Revisado: 01-29-25
I found the story compelling. Only my second Uris but he writes driving narrative. He pulls together so many seemingly tangential elements to weave a breath taking narrative. On top of that, the performer is unsurpassed! He does a range of accents effortlessly, making it sound like a community of actors! Superb!

Historia
In 1962, Don and Carol Richardson risked their lives to share the gospel with the Sawi people of New Guinea. Peace Child tells their unforgettable story of living among these headhunters and cannibals who valued treachery through fattening victims with friendship before the slaughter. God gave Don and Carol the key to the Sawi hearts via a redemptive analogy from their own mythology.

Worth reading!
Revisado: 08-20-24
This book was packed with data, revealing a human history more nuanced than your average sociology or history text. I found the argument compelling but the narrative needed a more explicit outline to help the reader track the reasoning.
Performance was strong, for an academic book, but needed to be read more dramatically for the same reason.

Historia
Two of the boldest and most creative scientists of all time were Michael Faraday (1791-1867) and James Clerk Maxwell (1831-1879). This is the story of how these two men - separated in age by 40 years - discovered the existence of the electromagnetic field and devised a radically new theory which overturned the strictly mechanical view of the world that had prevailed since Newton's time.

Historia
Originally published in 1994, this book was a fly-fishing phenomenon in the way Howell Raines' Fly Fishing Through the Mid-Life Crisis was. Taking his fishing hobby to near metaphysical levels, Ted Leeson tells about his passions: rivers, trout, and fly fishing. With wry humor and rare insight, he explores questions that engage most fishermen: What is it about rivers that draws us so irresistibly, and why does fly fishing seem such an aptly suited response?

Beside "A River Runs Through It" there are few peers. Lots of descriptive narrative but falling far short. This approaches it. The writing is vivid and picturesque. The scenes are delicious.

MUST read!
Revisado: 06-27-22
Bloom absolutely knows his subject and his audience. This is not a windbag polemic, this is an erudite and precision analysis of higher education in the US in 1980. 40 years later (now) you will recognize the sources of the carnage in college and public discourse proving Bloom was exactly right.
This is particularly valuable because we think our current problems the worst. we forget about public violence in the 70's and in colleges. This completely proves Bloom's principle assumption: humans always face the same problems and we should "learn" to address these fundamental issues through liberal education which, at least since 1980, we no longer have access too.

Historia
New Testament scholar N. T. Wright reveals how we have been misreading the Gospels for centuries, powerfully restoring the lost central story of the scripture: that the coronation of God through the acts of Jesus was the climax of human history. Wright fills the gaps that centuries of misdirection have opened up in our collective spiritual story, tracing a narrative from Eden to Jesus to today.

Transforming ..!
Revisado: 05-01-22
This seemed academic at first; another viewpoint, another slant, another effort to retell "the gospel." However, as I reached the end of the narrative, it was as if my 50 year journey as a Christian crystallized and all the disparate, hard to fit elements fell into place with this lens.
I now am excited to share God's kingdom with others. "Getting saved" was not compelling, but God's work in my life and in the world to transform creation into His purpose is a vision both believer and unbeliever can share. What amazing common ground!
Tom, thank you for this gift!!
