I love how she captures complexity and honesty. Naming the problems with the left while still holding onto a liberation based framework. Everyone who cares about the world could benefit from reading this.

transformative poetry
Revisado: 09-29-23
This book was a beautiful emotional journey. I found myself feeling loved, angry, guilty, ashamed, grieving and seen. These parts of me arose to the surface so I could offer them compassion. I'm reminded of why I love poetry and inspired to write my own

Historia
What would it be like to live in a well-rested world? Far too many of us have claimed productivity as the cornerstone of success. Brainwashed by capitalism, we subject our bodies and minds to work at an unrealistic, damaging, and machine‑level pace—feeding into the same engine that enslaved millions into brutal labor for its own relentless benefit. In Rest Is Resistance, Tricia Hersey, aka the Nap Bishop, casts an illuminating light on our troubled relationship with rest and how to imagine and dream our way to a future where rest is exalted.

Historia
As a young child in North Carolina, Jacob Tobia wasn't the wrong gender, they just had too much of the stuff. Barbies? Yes. Playing with bugs? Absolutely. Getting muddy? Please. Princess dresses? You betcha. Jacob wanted it all, but because they were "a boy", they were told they could only have the masculine half. Acting feminine labelled them "a sissy" and brought social isolation. It took Jacob years to discover that being "a sissy" isn't something to be ashamed of. It's a source of pride.

This was exactly what I needed
Revisado: 10-11-20
this book came into my life at the exact right time. I found the narrative quality and the humor really engaging and easy to read, but I also appreciated the times when the author stepped back and looked at the big picture systemic issues. it felt really validating for myself as a non-binary person and I will recommend it to friends.

Conflict Is Not Abuse

Historia
From intimate relationships to global politics, Sarah Schulman observes a continuum: that inflated accusations of harm are used to avoid accountability. Illuminating the difference between conflict and abuse, Schulman directly addresses our contemporary culture of scapegoating. This deep, brave, and bold work reveals how punishment replaces personal and collective self-criticism, and shows why difference is so often used to justify cruelty and shunning.

Important Perspective
Revisado: 01-18-19
I really appreciate how Sarah explores the complicity of conflict in our time. She doesn't resort to simplifying and demonizing language to make a point (as we often see), and backs up her points with both research and relatable stories.

Great overview of trauma therapy
Revisado: 12-20-17
Would you listen to The Body Keeps the Score again? Why?
Bessel Van Der Kolk walks the reader through how the feild of psychotherapy came to understand trauma as we know it. This helped me to understand how things like the ACE study fit into the development of trauma treatment. He ties in the research with stories of clients and his work in the field, in the second half he reviews a lot of different treatment methods and gives some specific case examples. This is an awesome place to start and get a foundation understanding of trauma and trauma treatment.
Any additional comments?
Even though I loved this book, he failed to even hint at the ways that racism, homophobia, ableism, and systemic oppression impact trauma. You just have to read this knowing it comes from the perspective of a white man who has not examined certain aspects of his biases.
