Good Individual Stories
Revisado: 10-16-18
I have listened to a couple other ‘Hauntee Life’ books by this author & really enjoyed them. Something about this one fell a little flat for me though. I definitely enjoyed some of the stories. I loved the the Monster in the Cupboard story!
I think that some of the philosophical aspects actually took away from tying it together rather than pulling it together, but, honestly, that is pretty subjective.
The narration threw me off a little too, it was written in an English voice (cupboard vs closet for example), but the narrator had an American accent. Overall though, the narration was engaging.
I always look forward to more good stories from this author.

This book is not for people with weak stomachs. When looking at it, it seems like a typical supernatural/semi-supernatural thriller. It was so much better than that! The story itself was way more interesting than the synopsis leads you to believe, the characters have this raw quality about them, tons of gory details, and though it wraps up nicely, not everything is perfect for the characters. I would definitely recommend this book.
The narration was great too. I have never listened to this narrator before, but would like to listen to more of her work.

Her supportive, though misunderstanding, physician husband, John, believes it is in her best interests to go on a "rest cure" after the birth of their child. The family spends the summer at a colonial mansion that has, in the narrator's words, "something queer about it" and her depression/anxiety, (commonly diagnosed today as postpartum depression), spirals out of control as she fixates on the yellow wallpaper in their bedroom.

Great Narration
Revisado: 01-24-17
I read this for an introductory college literature course about 10 years ago. I really only remembered that I loved it, but not much else. I listened to a newly released audio version this time and it was amazing. The narrator, Kitty Hendrix, was fantastic and really captured the stream-of-consciousness style within the narration. I would definitely recommend this audiobook to anyone who is a fan of this piece. I will also be looking for books books narrated by Kitty Hendrix.

Characters Who Lack Empathy
Revisado: 01-18-17
This was an interesting premise & I thought I was going to enjoy this.
I did like that this attempted to tackle mental illness and also touched on domestic violence issues as well. They are 2 topics that are relevant right now.
Unfortunately, this legitimately upset me. Eric, the husband, is a selfish, rude asshole. Through the character, mental illness is treated as an inconvenience to others and something that Abby should feel sorry for. This simply reinforces the negative stigma that surrounds mental illness right now. This was written in a way that I felt I was supposed to feel sorry for Eric. I didn't. I hated him. Everything from his lack of empathy to the fact that he referred to them as "his children" rather than "their children" or "our children" EVERY time (sans 1 time at the end) makes him even worse. Mary Margaret was just as bad, yet, she's supposed to be seen as a savior of some sort. I love books with unlikeable characters. Characters who are flawed and real make for for some of the most interesting books, but I don't think these characters were meant to be unlikeable & their unlikeability didn't enhance or move along the story.
I thought the narrator captured Abby's voice perfectly.

Fluid Characters
Revisado: 01-18-17
This book was a little confusing for me. At the beginning, I felt that ai had a good sense of who the characters were and their motivations. As the story went on though, the characters changed, but not in a developmental way. It was difficult to really tell what a character was like and what his or her true motivations were, so in the end, I did not really understand the basic point of the story.
I didn't care for the narrator's voice for the main character, Luther, because it fed into a negative stereotype a little, but other than that, the narrator did a great job with the various characters in the book and making each one unique.

Empathy for Characters
Revisado: 01-09-17
This was an interesting and quick read. I liked that you felt as though you knew the characters quickly and were invested in what happened to them. It was also nice to have a different approach to a life review/reminiscence story.
I enjoyed the narrator's narrator voice. The main character's voice seemed was a little strange, but it may have actually fit the character well.

Different
Revisado: 01-09-17
This is a difficult book to review. There were some parts that really interested me & other parts where I wasn't interested at all.
It is told in the first person & there are scenes of past memories, but they aren't really written as an alternating timeline. I found that I was very interested in the main character's past & how it led him to his current life. Where I think this fell short for me were the connections between past and present & that everything didn't really seem to come together.
The narrator was amazing and I would definitely like to listen to more of his work in the future.

Different Premise
Revisado: 11-27-16
The general concept of this book was interesting. It was unusual, which was nice. The way everything was connected was done well, and tied up nicely.
I love a good pun, but there were so many that it kind of distracted from the story for me.
The narrator was good. The voicing didn't vary a lot, but it was easy to distinguish characters.

Good Ending
Revisado: 11-24-16
I would definitely recommend reading the first book of the series before this one. Though you probably could read it as a stand alone, I think some of the people and plots would be missed.
I didn't have any strong feelings about this book until the end. There is a reveal at the end that so really enjoyed and though really tied everything together nicely, but also set up a next book well.
The narrator is perfect for this book. The accents and pacing seemed in keeping with the text, which always makes audiobooks more enjoyable.

Good Until the End
Revisado: 11-22-16
I liked this...until the end. Some of the descriptions and language were so crazy that I couldn't help but laugh. It was interesting, gross, and humorous all at once.
Unfortunately, once it went into a supernatural place seemingly out of nowhere, it kind of ruined it for me. Maybe if it had had more of a supernatural vibe before the end, I would have enjoyed the ending more.
Joe Hempel was amazing (as always). He did great accents & had tons of different voices in this book. I think it was once of his best performances!
