Historia
Mountain man and fur trader Jedediah Smith casts a heroic shadow. He was the first Anglo-American to travel overland to California via the Southwest, and he roamed through more of the West than anyone else of his era. His adventures quickly became the stuff of legend. Using new information and sifting fact from folklore, Barton H. Barbour now offers a fresh look at this dynamic figure.

Well researched and written, poorly presented
Revisado: 11-15-24
The narrator Pratt’s incessant and improper mispronunciations, particularly of Oregon, are distracting and annoying. Otherwise this is a delightful telling of an essential American tale.

Historia
In The Misunderstood Jew, scholar Amy-Jill Levine helps Christians and Jews understand the "Jewishness" of Jesus so that their appreciation of him deepens and a greater interfaith dialogue can take place. Levine's humor and informed truth - telling provokes honest conversation and debate about how Christians and Jews should understand Jesus, the New Testament, and each other.

Discussion of Israeli-Palestinian conflict in chapter 7 - YIKES
Revisado: 10-28-24
I generally really appreciate this author’s insights about the Jewish-Christian dynamic and incorporating the Bible into her presentation. Her assertions about Israel & Palestine sound like a saxophone that’s badly out of tune in light of the current slaughter.

Awesome, but why so dreadfully long? The same beautiful morality play could have been presented in half of this prose.

If I were in charge, every high school student would be required to study selected passages of Toland’s epic work. This is 2024, less than 80 years since Hitler’s demise. Yet how many of our neighbors have either forgotten, or never knew about the evils of Nazism?

Historia
Many consider the Battle of Midway to have turned the tide of the Pacific War. It is without question one of the most famous battles in history. Now, for the first time since Gordon W. Prange's best-selling Miracle at Midway, Jonathan Parshall and Anthony Tully offer a new interpretation of this great naval engagement. Shattered Sword makes extensive use of Japanese primary sources. It also corrects the many errors of Mitsuo Fuchida's Midway: The Battle That Doomed Japan It thus forces a major, potentially controversial reevaluation of the great battle.

A champion of the downtrodden, Eleanor drew on her experience and used her role as First Lady to help those in need.

A revealing and controversial account of the events surrounding Pearl Harbor. Pulitzer Prize - winning author John Toland presents evidence that FDR and his top advisors knew about the planned Japanese attack but remained silent. Infamy reveals the conspiracy to cover up the facts and find scapegoats for the greatest disaster in United States military history. New York Times best-seller.

Volatile & enlightening
Revisado: 01-27-24
Well presented and argued. I appreciate that Toland exposes all sides of the political and military questions that led the U.S. into WW2. He doesn’t demand that the president nor American government was evil, but he does insist mistakes were made and lays out lessons that must be learned. This story is so essential and applicable to today’s world, which might be just as dangerous, if not much more so.

How did MacArthur make his dramatic escape from Corregidor? And what is the story behind the greatest capitulation in American history, General Wainwright’s forced surrender of the Philippines?

Historia
Finnegans Wake is the greatest challenge in 20th-century literature. Who is Humphrey Chimpden Earwicker? And what did he get up to in Phoenix Park? And what did Anna Livia Plurabelle have to say about it? In the rich nighttime and the language of dreams, here are history, anecdote, myth, folk tale and, above all, a wondrous sense of humor, colored by a clear sense of humanity. In this exceptional reading by the Irish actor Barry McGovern, with Marcella Riordan, the world of the Wake is more accessible than ever before.

Gobbledygook
Revisado: 02-15-23
This “classic” work is, to say the least, OVERRATED. I appreciate that it took Joyce a long time to produce it. But come on, this is ridiculous. I loved Ulysses, for what it’s worth. Consuming Finnegan’s was excruciating. You must be committed before you begin, otherwise, why bother?
