When Alice and Leo move into a newly renovated house in The Circle, a gated community of exclusive houses, it is everything they’ve dreamed of. But appearances can be deceptive… As Alice is getting to know her neighbors, she discovers a devastating secret about her new home, and begins to feel a strong connection with Nina, the therapist who lived there before. Alice becomes obsessed with trying to piece together what happened two years before. But no one wants to talk about it. Her neighbors are keeping secrets and things are not as perfect as they seem…

An Chilean Story from the Women who Don’t Talk
Revisado: 10-19-24
Loved Estella’s story that is the opposite of magical realism of male South American writers. I listened to the translated novel which enlivened Estella’s statement after she is imprisoned. Loved it!

Historia
Alice, a fierce and respected Parisian cop, wakes up on a Central Park bench with no memory of the night before, handcuffed to a complete stranger - a musician named Gabriel. Disoriented, dazed, and with someone else’s blood on her shirt, Alice works furiously to reconnect the dots. She remembers clubbing with her friends the night before on the Champs-Élysées. Gabriel claims he was playing a gig in Dublin. Was she drugged? Kidnapped? Why is the gun in her jacket pocket missing a bullet? And whose blood is on her clothes?

Plot was Lost in Translation?
Revisado: 05-21-24
Contrived, unrealistic story and characters. The French woman cop was degraded and gaslighted to the extreme by all the male characters “helping” her. They decided best treatment was to trick and emotionally brutalize Alice. This is a story about abhorrent treatment of a traumatized woman already brutalized. By the end I was hoping Alice killed the other characters. Unrealistic and half baked research by author. Detestable story that i finished because the narrators were great. Could only have been written, edited and published by men. And I wanted to like this novel! Staggering how much was lost by translator and editors. Doubtful that there was a professional consultant. Either Guilaume Musso is a chauvinist sadist or he should fire his publisher.

Creepiness!
Revisado: 05-14-24
The creepy stories move quickly as the reader is compelled to find out what’s next! Freida McFadden keeps you in touch with your worst fears..and it happens and then there’s more. Themes of getting even and disciplined revenge are outrageous and satisfying. Not a calming chapter, only horror upon horror. Great fun, yuck reads.

Loved the experience of listening of Maggie Shipstead’s fine writing. The lack of sentimentality and droll, annoying, cool. characters reveal the fact that relationship is basically transactional.

Entertaining Mystery
Revisado: 11-13-23
“Her Perfect Family” is the perfect “who done it” when COVID, RSV or flu strike. Need a sleepless night + day to enter and not exit the apartment or book until Teresa Driscoll brings you through her Alt-Clue story of a student shot in the Cathedral at her graduation ceremony. There are more characters, connections and distractions than a Clue board.

Historia
It all starts with the radio. Dorothy's husband has left for work, and she is at the kitchen sink washing the dishes, listening to classical music. Suddenly, the music fades out and a soft, close, dreamy voice says, "Don't worry, Dorothy." A couple weeks later, there is a special interruption in regular programming. The announcer warns all listeners of an escaped sea monster. That afternoon, the seven-foot-tall lizard man walks through Dorothy's kitchen door. She is frightened at first, but there is something attractive about the monster, and the two begin a tender, clandestine affair.

Why 6 years to be in the mood?
Revisado: 04-17-23
First go gave up after 60 pages because asking too much time & focus.
This time read over a long, cold weekend. Couldn’t put down and read right through. Loved characters set in a France during Occupation.. Fantasy, historical neo fiction. Author is fixated on snails but nice wrap around with the story. Sorry did not jump in 6 years ago.

When the triplets leave for college, Johanna, faced with being truly alone, makes the decision to have a fourth child.
