Historia
“As I sat in the front row that day, I was 80% faking it with a 100% real Gucci bag.” Samhita Mukhopadhyay had finally made it: she had her dream job, dream clothes—dream life. But time and time again, she found herself sacrificing time with family and friends, paying too much for lattes, and limping home after working for twelve hours a day. Success didn't come without costs, right? Or so she kept telling herself. The Myth of Making It is a field guide and manifesto for all of us who are tired, searching for justice, and longing to be liberated from the oppressive grip of hustle culture.

essentially a gender studies term paper
Revisado: 04-06-25
Download thinking its about modern business life--its really an academic gender studies term paper. Decent at identifying problems and reasonable complaints about work life. I'm not the intended audience-- cis-gendered, white male--and found the criticisms of the book worth consideration. And while no doubt females and minorities feel far more negative

Historia
The tipping point is that magic moment when an idea, trend, or social behavior crosses a threshold, tips, and spreads like wildfire. Just as a single sick person can start an epidemic of the flu, so too can a small but precisely targeted push cause a fashion trend, the popularity of a new product, or a drop in the crime rate. This widely acclaimed bestseller, in which Malcolm Gladwell explores and brilliantly illuminates the tipping point phenomenon, is already changing the way people throughout the world think about selling products and disseminating ideas.

pop science worth a listen
Revisado: 03-20-25
Pop science; easy listen; worth consideration--but don't take too seriously. Overlooks that broken windows could be better addressed by fixing positive things, and avoiding some of the more draconian police tactics done in the theory's name

Historia
Our competitive, service-oriented societies are taking a toll on the late-modern individual. Rather than improving life, multitasking, user-friendly technology, and the culture of convenience are producing disorders that range from depression to attention deficit disorder to borderline personality disorder. Byung-Chul Han interprets the spreading malaise as an inability to manage negative experiences in an age characterized by excessive positivity and the universal availability of people and goods

Too many words to say so little
Revisado: 02-01-25
It is a philosophy book only really. Had hoped for something less academic and more actionable. No remedy readily theorized---we are all doomed by our own self exploration and a society that exacerbates achievement and positivity counter intuitively to our demise. That's the one paragraph summary.

Historia
In this eye-opening account, Cal Newport debunks the long-held belief that "follow your passion" is good advice. Not only is the cliché flawed - preexisting passions are rare and have little to do with how most people end up loving their work - but it can also be dangerous, leading to anxiety and chronic job hopping. After making his case against passion, Newport sets out on a quest to discover the reality of how people end up loving what they do.

Love Cal, but this book misses so much
Revisado: 10-14-24
While Cal is correct that "follow your passion" is not great advice, neither is his alternative of scarcity and career capital. for example, the claim that "a purple cow would truly be remarkable" fails to consider that if everyone has a purple cow, the cow is no longer remarkable. Moreover, Newport only, only tests his ideas anecdotally with a few workers -- there's no control test to explore people who attempted to amass career capital and did not achieve such results. Many people follow the basic advice of this book with less than amazing results. While Cal's tips have merit, there's no magic here

Historia
For much of his life, historian Howard Zinn chronicled American history from the bottom up, throwing out the official version taught in schools - with its emphasis on great men in high places - to focus on the street, the home, and the workplace. Known for its lively, clear prose as well as its scholarly research, A People's History of the United States is the only volume to tell America's story from the point of view of - and in the words of - America's women, factory workers, African-Americans, Native Americans, the working poor, and immigrant laborers.

Some good points, but a slog
Revisado: 10-07-24
Great highlights of some less talked about and hidden moments of America history. However some stretches and over emphasis diluted some of the better points. The audio narration also had a few distracting mispronounced words.

Historia
By official accounts, the Navy SEALs of Alpha platoon returned as heroes after their 2017 deployment to Mosul, following a vicious, bloody, and successful campaign to drive ISIS from the city. But within the platoon a different war raged. Even as Alpha’s chief, Eddie Gallagher, was being honored by the Navy for his leadership, several of his men were preparing to report him for war crimes, alleging that he’d stabbed a prisoner in cold blood and taken lethal sniper shots at unarmed civilians.

Historia
America’s backstory is a whitewashed mythology implanted in our collective memory. It should come as no surprise that the dominant narrative of American history is blighted with errors and oversights—after all, history books were written by white men with their perspectives at the forefront. It could even be said that the devaluation and erasure of the Black experience is as American as apple pie. In Black AF History, Michael Harriot presents a more accurate version of American history.

Over the past four years, world-renowned economist Thomas Piketty documented his close observations on current events through a regular column in the French newspaper Le Monde. His pen captured the rise and fall of Trump, the drama of Brexit, Macron’s ascendance to the French presidency, the unfolding of a global pandemic, and much else besides, always through the lens of Piketty’s fight for a more equitable world. This collection brings together those articles.
