The most interesting aspect of the book was how Germany perhaps benefited from the split of East and West, but overall the author didn’t know how to zoom in and zoom out in the broader picture of post-war Germany. By the end of the chapter on re-education I was done with the book.

One particular issue I have with the author is on page 243 which has the premise that the Soviets had an ideological advantage of being more forgiving to Germany while the West did not (even though on page 149 he quoted the SS saying West treated them better). Interesting claim as it runs counter to everything I’ve read of the period but willing to be curious. To bolster his point he gives a single quote of Stalin and a remark on Marxist theory allows forgiveness while saying of the allies “As a matter of principle, every German was to be seen as an enemy. The practical consequence of this attitude were apparent in the prohibition on fraternization…They forbade their soldiers to have contact with the civilian population beyond the barest necessities.” This is an embarrassing line of argumentation.

When a nation’s army enters another country and strict boundaries are placed on young troops from authority I do not interpret such rules as a condemnation of an enemy but rather for each party to behave (should read what Soviets did to German women). As for Soviets, forgiveness entails the following: dismantling their industry, extracting resources, new prison labor, torture, political oppression, anybody not toeing the line considered fascist, ect. There are examples of how the allies mistreated Germans and what examples does the author give of how allies mistreated Germans…didn’t give handshakes when seeing Germans on the street…laughable. I enjoyed the author’s take as it hits that sweet middle ground for me where she critiques your third wave feminist types while not reverting back to restrictive Christian conservative mold. In fact you can see overlap in concerns of both camps which you would think would be a moment of working together to assist people to live fulfilled lives. Additional plus of not having too much fluff/page-filler just to make a book. Well done.

The book has a few good points, but I felt it wasn’t very concise. Book could have been ten pages. There were times this felt more of a self-help book rather than instructing various methods of improving how to learn/retaining what was learned. It felt like a very surface level of engagement.

I find this book has some gems, many will probably like and benefit in some way from reading. I find that he goes off on tangents that don’t align with the premise of the title of the book like comparing endurance of dogs to humans, pseudo-diets (interesting yet again not really why I picked up the book), and so forth. I would have preferred he zeroed in on how we escape anxiety and other emotions through our addiction to comfort. He spent too much time on his own life too, which again could just be me as I’m for the more boring “give me information” type.

I enjoyed this book and its lack of fluff. Very precise towards its aim and gave plenty of examples and quotes where things have changed from the original intention of the civil rights era.

It appears the more radical and fanatic one becomes in politics the more susceptible to conspiracy theories he or she becomes. Great book and displays the inability of fanatics to engage in what they claim to prize, free speech.

Enjoyed the book, those interested in this topic should check out YouTube channel “Ryan Chapman”. Goes into the political historical development of the ideas talked about in a neutral manner.
