Perfect not-so-perfect ending

Not much to say. It’s bittersweet and comes to a realistic culmination. I really cared about characters that don’t even exist! Beautiful, immersive writing.

Historia
New York City in 1978 is a dirty, dangerous place to live - and die. Joey Peacock knows this as well as anybody - he has spent the last forty years as an adolescent vampire, perfecting the routine he now enjoys: womanizing in punk clubs and discotheques, feeding by night, and sleeping by day with others of his kind in the macabre labyrinth under the city's sidewalks.

These stories are experiences. You just are hanging on for dear life, unable to get off, and when it’s over, you’re standing there in awe looking back up at it like “what the hell?” Then getting back on it again.

Historia
Nineteen-year-old Signa Farrow, orphaned as a baby, has been raised by a string of guardians, each more interested in her wealth than her well-being—and each has met an untimely end. Her last remaining relatives are the Hawthornes, an eccentric family living at the glittering and gloomy estate of Thorn Grove. Thorn Grove’s patriarch, Elijah, mourns his late wife, Lillian, through wild parties and drink, while eldest son Percy grapples for control of the family’s waning reputation and daughter Blythe suffers from the same mysterious illness that killed her mother.

It was ok
Revisado: 12-18-23
I liked the complex characters, the twisty plot, and the gothic nature of this story but I didn’t like the lack of real consequences for some of the decisions Signa made. The writing seemed repetitive as if the author couldn’t trust us readers to remember or keep up with the plot. I did like that two things that happened were unpredictable. I thought one character was someone else and it turned out wrong. I don’t like the nickname trope. When Death calls Signa Little Bird, it gives me the creeps. He also tells her she’s playing God but at the same time she is rewarded for doing the same thing. On the fence with this one.

Historia
Katniss Everdeen, girl on fire, has survived, even though her home has been destroyed. Peeta has been captured by the Capitol. District 13 really does exist. There are rebels. There are new leaders. A revolution is unfolding. It is by design that Katniss was rescued from the arena in the cruel and haunting Quarter Quell, and it is by design that she has long been part of the revolution without knowing it. District 13 has come out of the shadows and is plotting to overthrow the Capitol. Everyone, it seems, has had a hand in the carefully laid plans - except Katniss.

Good finish
Revisado: 12-09-23
This was very sad but also a good hopeful yet realistic ending. I realized for book 2 I thought the narrator was mispronouncing “mutations” until I got a copy of Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes and saw it really was “muttations “ . I liked that the romance wasn’t centered around being head over heels but about other things like being considerate, fighting to choose one another despite their trials, and protecting one another from external forces and even from themselves.

Obsessed
Revisado: 12-01-23
I’ve listened to this on YouTube and audible. This is so unsettling and eerie but also captivating because you have to fill in the blanks with your own imagination or guesses as to what Noone is experiencing, whether these experiences have real-world elements (and what each could be), what part all this may play in the third game (if it ties in) and whether Cecelia is a character we’ve met before…pair the outstanding voice acting with the music and it’s just magic.

Love it, one small issue
Revisado: 11-28-23
Decent narration and plot, but for some reason, toward the end the narrator says “muh-tations” instead of pronouncing it “mew-tations”. Small issue but it grated the ears. Overall good audiobook.

Ehhh
Revisado: 08-18-23
I couldn’t finish this. Got halfway through and feel like I could be listening to or reading anything else. The narration is robotic. I thought for sure this was a project done by AI to see if readers would approve. Well this isn’t it.
Story was ok but not really what I was expected. This isn’t enemies to lovers. It’s “supposed to be enemies” to our MC basically obsessing over the enemy, believing everything he says, and going out of her way to help him because her father is a cartoonishly bad person so she has no real allegiance to him. Meh.

It’s ok
Revisado: 08-14-23
Very tell don’t show. And everything is explained to the point you as the listener don’t have to think. Loads of talking, brief action, and a bunch of miserable characters. Interesting concepts that haven’t been really fleshed out (I guess will be in the next book). I wasn’t really into the narration. The MC sounded whiny. I did like the MC was said not to be conventionally pretty but aside from general descriptions of her being soft or big in areas, she wasn’t treated any differently from those who were beautiful so I’m not sure why it mattered if it didn’t present a problem. I do not have enough interest to get the next book but it wasn’t the worst thing I’ve read.

Revisado: 07-19-23
Captivated by the way he reads! It’s not like he’s reading to me but telling his own story. I could listen to him all day.
The story is great, as I’ve read the physical book but decided to listen based off the sample. The only issue I had was the audio between dialogue and narration was noticeably different volumes (at least when listening with only one airpod). Not enough of a nuisance to deduct a star

Revisado: 07-18-23
Glad I didn’t listen to some of the bad reviews I’ve seen. This story is, like another reviewer said, a mix of Haunting of Hill House, Coraline, Crimson Peak, and Haunted Mansion. The writing style is beautiful, the narrator perfect. I loved everything about this book including the creepy undertones in the story. Kinda wish I waited until October to listen to this.
