Historia
From the inimitable bestselling author Thomas Cahill, another popular history - this one focusing on how the innovations of the Renaissance and the Reformation changed the Western world. A truly revolutionary audiobook. In Volume VI of his acclaimed Hinges of History series, Thomas Cahill guides us through the thrilling period of the Renaissance and the Reformation (the late fourteenth to the early seventeenth century), so full of innovation and cultural change that the Western world would not experience its like again until the twentieth century.

Cahill is my favorite historian. I've read every book. He is also a delightful lecturer... I heard him when he was in town flacking this book and he was great. But honestly, please, this reading is deadly.

Historia
The Book of Tea by Okakura Kakuzo is a long essay linking the role of tea (teaism) to the aesthetic and cultural aspects of Japanese life. Addressed to a western audience, it was originally written in English and is one of the great English tea classics. Okakura had been taught at a young age to speak English and was proficient at communicating his thoughts to the Western mind. In his book, he discusses such topics as Zen and Taoism, but also the secular aspects of tea and Japanese life.

Disappointed
Revisado: 01-16-20
I like this book very much, I’ve liked it for a long time.
But not this rendition of it. Reader inserts two. Or three. Pauses ran. Domly in each sentence
Just about time you are enjoying the inspiration of the text the entire recording is given over to a shakuhachi (bamboo flute) might have been recorded on a Walkman. FOR NINE CHAPTERS.

Historia
Although T. E. Lawrence, commonly known as "Lawrence of Arabia’, died in 1935, the story of his life has captured the imagination of succeeding generations. Seven Pillars of Wisdom is a monumental work in which he chronicles his role in leading the Arab Revolt against the Turks during the First World War. A reluctant leader, and wracked by guilt at the duplicity of the British, Lawrence nevertheless threw himself into his role, suffering the blistering desert conditions and masterminding military campaigns which culminated in the triumphant march of the Arabs into Damascus.

These techniques have been used by real language learners, most of whom previously considered themselves owners of a “bad memory,” to make real strides in learning French vocabulary.

This is a delight
Revisado: 07-18-15
Peter Straub, a novelist in the terror genre with very high literary standards once told me"if you want to learn how to write dialog, read Raymond Chandler". Mr. Porters brilliant performance brings this to life. The plot, like many of his, becomes a bit Baroque but the language, intelligence and wit make this an irresistible work of art. Bravo.

Though unappreciated in his own time, Johann Sebastian Bach has ascended to Olympian heights, the verdict of contemporary audiences long since overruled by succeeding generations of music lovers. But what makes his music great? In this series of 32 lectures, a working composer and musicologist brings his exceptional teaching skills to the task of helping you hear the extraordinary sweep of Bach's music. You'll understand the compositional language that enabled him to compose such extravagant, unbridled music while still maintaining precise control of every aspect - beat, melody, melodic repetition, interaction, and harmony.

I couldn't take it
Revisado: 01-28-08
I have enough knowledge of literature, reading, poetry, and theater to say with some conviction that I deserve my money back for this title. I couldn't listen after the first four minutes, so what good is it? This reader applies precisely the same emphasis to every single sentence, rising to a point 3/4 of the way through and trailing off. again, and again, and again, and again. Proust is twisting in his grave.
