Historia
1817. As a young woman, clever, self-reliant Lydia Templeton scandalised society by rejecting Lewis Durrant, the county's most eligible batchelor.
Ten years later, Lydia has no regrets and, having concluded that matters of the heart need no longer trouble her, she is quite happy to remain unwed. But others still seek Lydia's advice on their love lives.

What a good time!
Revisado: 11-01-23
I don’t generally leave reviews but I feel moved to let audible book readers know that you really can’t do better than this book as historical romances go. Phyllida Nash’s narration is impeccable, and the character and plot development create constant interest. The writing is beautiful, with an intelligent wit about it that is a delight. I really didn’t want it to end.

Historia
Recently retired policeman Tom Kettle is settling into the quiet of his new home, a lean-to annexed to a Victorian castle overlooking the Irish Sea. For months he has barely seen a soul, catching only glimpses of his eccentric landlord and a nervous young mother who has moved in next door. Occasionally, fond memories return, of his family, his beloved wife June and their two children.

Fab story; perfect narration
Revisado: 06-04-23
I have never left a review before, despite having listened to hundreds of books. This time, though, I am drawn to express my admiration both for the amazing writing, and the superb narration. A marriage made in heaven.

Excruciating narration
Revisado: 03-08-23
I don’t mind Carola Dunn’s light novels but have decided I cannot listen to another of Mia Charamonte’s narrations. Her English accent is atrocious, characterised by the oddest (mis)pronunciations I have ever heard. I cannot understand why anyone would employ her in this capacity - at least, perhaps she would be tolerable in her native accent but reproducing aristocratic English voices is utterly beyond her.

Why we think it’s a great listen: An all-time Audible favorite that mixes historic fiction, adventure, and romance with one of the most fascinating literary devices: time travel. Outlander introduces an exhilarating world of heroism and breathtaking thrills as one woman is torn between past and present, passion and love. Blast from the past
Revisado: 09-10-12
Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?
This is an old-fashioned historical romance. It's set in pre-Jacobite Scotland, and we're delivered there by a device that's a little magical. In short, it's a rattling good yarn, with lots of derring-do, romance, and sex!
Who was your favorite character and why?
Oh for sure Jamie has to be my favourite. He is, as my daughter would say, HOT!
Did the narration match the pace of the story?
The narrator has a nice voice, but she mispronounces some words (I'm a pedant), and her delivery is overall a bit girly for my taste.
Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
IMPOSSIBLE to listen in one sitting. It's about 32 hours long! It took me and my 13-year-old son all around the South Island of New Zealand: a great book for the car. (The sex scenes, which sometimes seemed to happen indecorously often, made us laugh at the incongruity of mother and son listening to it all together!) The story provided the basis for a bit of a history lesson on the Tudors and the Stuarts, so there was an educational upside.
Any additional comments?
The female romantic lead's dialogue was a bit faulty, I thought. She came across too often as rather school-ma'am-ish. However Jamie as the dauntless Scottish brave was entirely the complete package. Where are those blokes these days? As mythically few as they ever were, I suspect...
