Historia
In their early twenties, Mimi Zhu was a survivor of intimate-partner abuse. This left them broken, in search of healing and ways to re-learn love. This work is a testament to the strength and adaptability all humans possess, a tribute to love. Be Not Afraid of Love explores the intersections of love and fear in self-esteem, friendship, family dynamics, and romantic relationships, and extends out to its effects on society and the greater political realm.

Betrayal is the worst kind of abuse experienced in relationships but we can heal by learning to trust ourselves.

one of my favorite books of all time
Revisado: 09-25-22
it’s been a long time since i’ve loved a book the way i love this beautiful work. mimi shares their story with refreshing tenderness and clarity. this book came to me exactly when i needed it and has brought me great comfort. this is a book i will return to when i need to be held, when i need to be kind to myself, and when i need to be reminded of the love and tenderness we all deserve.

Historia
As a young child in North Carolina, Jacob Tobia wasn't the wrong gender, they just had too much of the stuff. Barbies? Yes. Playing with bugs? Absolutely. Getting muddy? Please. Princess dresses? You betcha. Jacob wanted it all, but because they were "a boy", they were told they could only have the masculine half. Acting feminine labelled them "a sissy" and brought social isolation. It took Jacob years to discover that being "a sissy" isn't something to be ashamed of. It's a source of pride.

Wow. Best audio book ever! Great for anyone & especially non-binary / gender nonconforming people + loved ones
Revisado: 10-13-19
Jacob Tobia is an incredible performer whose voice brings their already hilarious writing to life. For the first time in a while, I actually could not focus on Netflix because all I wanted to do was listen to their book. I cried multiple times, I choked water from laughing, and I related in so many ways it was alarming. (Spoiler alert - we both were in handbell choir?!) I recommend this to anyone and especially non-binary folx out there. 💘

i didn't expect to like this book so much
Revisado: 04-13-15
when i first read the synopsis for this book, i had low expectations, so i was taken back when the story unfolded. the way it is written makes you feel everything the protagonist is feeling, and not a lot of books have done that for me. at some points, i was so emotionally invested in the book that i actually started bawling my eyes out. i love this book & i highly recommend it.
