Historia
Jane Austen fan Amelia Bennett sneaks away from a dull tour of an English country manor, only to run into a man more dashing than Mr. Darcy himself. About to lose his ancestral home to family debts, charming aristocrat Tom Calder invites his American guest to join him in drinking his way through the estate’s priceless wine collection. But when they wake in his bed the next morning, they’re convinced that in their drunken haze they witnessed a murder. Problem is, the body has vanished and no one believes them.

Really nice story and production
Revisado: 06-07-24
A romance with echoes of English seventeenth and eighteenth century romances, with modern relationship advice mixed in. Predictable in all the right ways.

Historia
Mary Magdalene is one of the most influential symbols in the history of Christianity - yet, if you look in the Bible, you'll find only a handful of verses that speak of her. How did she become such a compelling saint in the face of such paltry evidence? In her effort to answer that question, Cynthia Bourgeault examines the Bible, church tradition, art, legend, and newly discovered texts to see what's there.

Lots to think about
Revisado: 06-16-22
The non-canonical gospels are a voice from the past, hidden until their discovery in an Egyptian cave in 1945. Since then, scholars have studied and discussed how these gospels reflect what Jesus meant to those early communities of Christians, and what their Christian ideals were.
The importance of (mainly) one of these gospels—the gospel of Mary Magdalene—is gently explained and beautifully read. Lots to think about with heart and mind.
It’s a shame that Audible’s recordings of books like this one—books that have appendices and notes—don’t include a PDF with that material.

Totally engaging
Revisado: 08-29-20
I grew up in the era of this story and found the book totally successful at evoking the innocence of children in a society that appears on the surface to be similarly innocent. The beauty and simplicity of the author’s language as his characters gradually understand the need to face down malice carried the story for me, malice that the boy (Cory) first encounters at a distance through a photo newsmagazine and later in the his own hometown. The characters will be with me for years to come. The narrator’s tone is a perfect match to the writing. I would guess that the story’s combination of humor and sometimes hilarious episodes of a boy’s awakening to life, choices, and danger would appeal to younger readers too.

Liked the mix of history, art, romance
Revisado: 09-12-18
Others mention disliking the French-accented English of one of the narrators as inauthentic. I am no expert, but that part of the performance reminded me of my French-Canadian grandmother’s English. So personally speaking, I found the accent charming. In terms of function, I like how two narrators—one French-sounding and the other English-sounding—reminded me which era of the story I was in – especially toward the end, where story sections are shorter than in the beginning of the book.

Historia
On a summer night in 2009, three lives intersected in one American neighborhood. Two people newly in love - Teresa Butz and Jennifer Hopper, who spent many years trying to find themselves and who eventually found each other - and a young man on a dangerous psychological descent: Isaiah Kalebu, age 23, the son of a distant, authoritarian father and a mother with a family history of mental illness. All three paths forever altered by a violent crime, all three stories a wake-up call to the system that failed to see the signs.

Deserves the prize
Revisado: 06-18-16
The writing in this book is amazing-complete, respectful of all people concerned, and lots of relevant facts.
As with many substance-based Audible books, though, I would like to see the Audible book come with a PDF with sources--and in the case, with some of the statistics Sanders gives in the last chapter. Guess I'll have to check the book out of the public library. ...

Helpful but ...
Revisado: 11-19-12
The approach to helping the reader learn German is a good one--especially the explanations of how the language "thinks." Each module is also affordable.
However, there are no "chapter" markers for the beginning of each lesson in the audible.com format. So it is impossible to back up and repeat a lesson easily. Since repetition is basic to learning, this obstacle is aggravating to say the least.
