Historia
Death is not waiting for us at the end of a long road. Death is always with us, in the marrow of every passing moment, a secret teacher hiding in plain sight, helping us to discover what matters most in life. So begins Frank Ostaseski's stirring book, The Five Invitations, an exhilarating meditation on the meaning of life and how maintaining an ever-present awareness of death can bring us closer to our truest selves.

The mess and the beauty of death. I feel like I should put capital letters in there.
Revisado: 07-05-24
I usually groan when I see on Audible that the author will be reading their own book. I did that here, nevertheless, I really wanted to listen. However, turns out that Frank, like Leonard Cohen, was born with the gift of a beautiful voice (this time without the irony that I believe Cohen intended with this line). It's a cultural thing, but I often find Asian voices too soft, & American voices too loud for my sensory integration capabilities. I was pleasantly surprised that I was really enjoying his slow reading voice, and his low tones. Just perfect for the subject matter he's addressing here. But! (dear listeners) it is never dull, or monotonous. In fact, I found it a poetic, thought-provoking and very real introduction to the experience of dying and death. Highly recommend.

Leo Tolstoy's classic story of doomed love is one of the most admired novels in world literature. Generations of readers have been enthralled by his magnificent heroine, the unhappily married Anna Karenina, and her tragic affair with dashing Count Vronsky.

Lively rendering of Tolstoy's masterpiece
Revisado: 05-15-24
This has always been one of my favourite novels and Gyllenhaal reads it masterfully. Across the entire length and breadth of the story, she infuses it with all the range of emotions and moods, as well the intellectual and spiritual curiosity that this great novel requires. With seemingly effortless expression and intonation, she also manages to make it convincingly current for the modern listener, eliciting the precise register to bring out its universal themes. This is sure to remain one of my top five Audible listens.

Historia
As our civilization careens towards a precipice of climate breakdown, ecological destruction and gaping inequality, people are losing their existential moorings. Our dominant worldview of disconnection, which tells us we are split between mind and body, separate from each other and at odds with the natural world, has passed its expiration date. Yet another world is possible. Award-winning author Jeremy Lent investigates humanity's age-old questions - who am I? why am I? how should I live? - from a fresh perspective.

Integrative, ethical, committed, ecological.

I loved The Patterning Instinct (Lent's first book) which I frequently return to and re-listen to various chapters, and I thoroughly enjoyed this book as well. This book is probably a more succinct presentation of his general worldview; it's a very accessible book from one of the most erudite ecological writers on the planet.

Historia
In this unnamed city, to be interesting is dangerous. Middle sister, our protagonist, is busy attempting to keep her mother from discovering her maybe-boyfriend and to keep everyone in the dark about her encounter with Milkman. But when first brother-in-law sniffs out her struggle, and rumours start to swell, middle sister becomes 'interesting'. The last thing she ever wanted to be. To be interesting is to be noticed and to be noticed is dangerous. Milkman is a tale of gossip and hearsay, silence and deliberate deafness. It is the story of inaction with enormous consequences.

OUTSTANDING
Revisado: 03-14-21
I loved reading Anna Burns' brilliant novel when it first came out, but Brid Brennan's outstanding narration here vastly enriched this novel for someone like me ( a 5th generation African person of Irish descent, but obviously now not attuned to Irish manners & etiquette), and so less able to imagine tone, nuance or how dialogue might be delivered.
Listening to her, I was able to apprehend so much more of what the interpersonal exchanges of the characters implied for the unfolding of the plot. In particular with Brennan's narration, the darker, more moving emotions as well as the razor sharp wit and utterly delightful humour in the dialogue stood out far more, and consequently I came away even more impressed by Anna Burns' writing. Quite wonderful!

Historia
When LSD was first discovered in the 1940s, it seemed to researchers, scientists and doctors as if the world might be on the cusp of psychological revolution. It promised to shed light on the deep mysteries of consciousness, as well as offer relief to addicts and the mentally ill. But in the 1960s, with the vicious backlash against the counter-culture, all further research was banned. In recent years, however, work has quietly begun again on the amazing potential of LSD, psilocybin and DMT. Could these drugs in fact improve the lives of many people?

Took away loads of new information, as well insights applicable for my own experiential journeys in this domain.
The author is a born narrator (as well as a compelling writer).
