Historia
Here is the novel that will be forever considered a triumph of the imagination. Set on the desert planet Arrakis, Dune is the story of the boy Paul Atreides, who would become the mysterious man known as Maud'dib. He would avenge the traitorous plot against his noble family and would bring to fruition humankind's most ancient and unattainable dream.

Too Many Cooks...
Revisado: 07-09-24
Can’t argue with the story - Herbert is the OG and Dune is a masterpiece. The narration, on the other hand…When will Audible learn that hiring a full cast of mismatched voice actors with inconsistent production quality will always be inferior to a single, quality narrator — no matter how many low-budget sound effects they try to use to cover it up?
In nearly every case, the casting choices for this book just feel wrong. Characters who should be young sound old; Characters who should be hardened sound childish; Characters who should be subtle sound spluttering and brash. Overall, many of the actors sound like they'd be more at home narrating the benefits of car insurance and antibacterial cream than breathing life into the world that inspired pretty much all of modern sci-fi.
Add to this the slap-dash and disjointed production quality, in which some scenes portray dialogue in full-cast format, and some leave all characters to be portrayed by Vance. This, of course, gives rise to an overall melange that is at once confusing, annoying, jarring and yes — very, very cringe.
Which brings me to my final gripe. Why these people thought that hiring a nearly 70-year-old British man to narrate the bulk of a story in which the two main characters are a woman and a fifteen-year-old boy, I have no idea. I doubt they do either. While I have nothing against Simon Vance himself — he seems a capable enough narrator in his own right — I felt he was very much the wrong choice for this book.
Bottom-line: Buy the book, watch the movie, have your mother read you a chapter every night before you go to bed. Just please, for the love of Shai-Hulud, do not spend money on this recording. This is not the way this story should be experienced

Powerful, but a bit technical
Revisado: 11-02-21
It’s always a treat to have a book narrated by the author themselves, as it adds so much. This is a deep, intensely personal account of the journey of a lifetime, and a window into what makes us all connected with the world around us.
The one issue I had with this book was that it could be a little dense at times, especially for an audiobook. I consider myself a fairly technical reader, and even I had to rewind and relisten to make sure that I understood what was being described. Of course, I also tend to listen to everything at 1.5-2x speed, so YMMV.

Historia
Speaking from the cultural viewpoint of the Lakota of the northern Plains, the author discusses the evolution of native cultures to fit within the environment and adapt to it, as opposed to changing it drastically or wholesale to fit human needs and comforts. He suggests that changing our contemporary thinking in relating to the earth in a less harmful way does not mean a drastic change in lifestyles....

A work of art
Revisado: 10-29-21
There’s something about hearing a book read by the original author that equates to so much more than the sum of its parts. Marshall is captivating, personable and insightful, and his points are as relevant today as they will be 100 years from now. This book is a treat, plain and simple. There’s no reason not to pick it up.

From Good to Great
Revisado: 09-05-21
For me, this is where the series really starts to get good. Don’t get me wrong, it was always fun, but Blood Rites is, to me at least, the book where Harry’s story finally comes into his own. All the hints and lingering questions Butcher has planted in the previous books slowly come into focus. The secondary characters start to acquire the depth and nuance they were in many ways lacking up to this point. And the series finally branches out beyond being simply a rollicking, fast-paced tour de forzare, beginning as well to show hints of the author’s philosophy on family, faith, friendship and love.
And of course, who doesn’t love a classic whodunit?
As for the narrator, Marsters once again solidifies his status as the voice of Harry Dresden. His execution is flawless, as always.

Historia
Four years ago, LAPD detective Harry Bosch was on a movie set, asking questions about the murder of a young production assistant, when an armored car arrived with $2 million cash for use in a heist scene. In a life-imitates-art firestorm, a gang of masked men converged on the delivery and robbed the armored car with guns blazing. The crime was never resolved, and the young woman's murder was in the stack of unsolved-case files Bosch carried home the night he left the LAPD.

Best One Yet
Revisado: 08-03-21
I’m not quite sure why Connelly chose to switch from third to first person in the middle of the series, but as far as I’m concerned, this is how it always should have been. As for the narrator, I thought for sure they’d never find someone as good as Dick Hill, but Cariou killed it. This is my favorite book so far in the series.

Historia
In the heart of Indian country in the American west, clandestine criminals were profiting greatly from the sale of sacred Native American artifacts stolen from tribal lands. These artifacts were so ancient they had been used since the migration of the first Americans into North America some 15,000 years ago. In the year 1998, the illegal trafficking of these artifacts peaked in Santa Fe, New Mexico.

Story makes up for lackluster narration
Revisado: 06-19-19
This book sits at that incredibly rare intersection of deep expertise and excellent storytelling. The author's obvious care for and knowledge of subject of Native American belief, her scathing remarks on the good old boys club of the FBI, and her general badassery made this book impossible to put down from beginning to end. In truth, I've never been so riveted by a non-fiction book -- something the narrator, with her choppy cadence and terrible pronunciations, did her best to distract from. In short, I would highly recommend the book to just about anyone, albeit unfortunately in hard copy.
