Historia
The ninth floor. Nine armies, each led by rich and powerful aliens from across the galaxy. Each team has one objective: to capture and hold the castle at the very center of the battlefield. Strategy, alliances, pitched battles, and, of course, betrayal ... It all makes for great fun and even greater television. After all, none of these powerful aliens really die when they’re playing war. Except this time. This time, winner takes all. Those who fall, stay in the ground.

NEW ACHIEVEMENT! This... Inevitable... Ruin...
Revisado: 02-14-25
While SOME reviews might laud the amazing writing and sprawling world building of Matt Dinniman, or the ALWAYS awesome narration of the wildly-talented Jeff Hays... We BOTH know you know this already. If you're reading this, it's because you've already listened to the other 6 books, and are currently waiting for the title to finish downloading before you yourself can listen... If you HAVEN'T listened to the other books and are reading this... Then WHAT ARE YOU DOING!?! What kind of psycho starts on the SEVENTH BOOK in a series? Seriously dude, what's up with that? Go start at book 1...
Rewaaaaard...
NOTHING! Go listen to the book, we don't hand out spoilers here. Who do you think we are? Harry Potter fans?

Historia
In Swimming to Freedom, Kent Wong captures his childhood amidst revolutionary times, where boyish adventures and school days mixed with dire poverty and political persecution. Mao’s Hundred Flower Campaign had ensnared Kent’s father. A decade later, the Cultural Revolution closed schools, plunged the country into chaos, and scattered Kent and his sisters to disparate villages, where they struggled to eke out a bare existence.

An engrossing tale of the indomitable human spirit
Revisado: 01-17-25
An exceptionally well-paced and engrossing listen, which I personally binged in two sittings because I was so engaged. I highly recommend for anyone who has been curious about first-hands accounts of the human-impact of the Cultural Revolution.
While there were brief moments where the narrator sounded almost-nervous, his presentation is still spot on.
That being said, NOTHING could distract from the heart-wrenching tale of a man's persuit of a better life and the future which might be.

The unexpectedly high-fantasy sequel to ReaMde
Revisado: 02-24-24
Stephenson brings his uniquely insightful projections of the future, and carves yet another imagination-capturing story. An absolute thriller, heartbreaker, and hope bringer, the story pulls together a collective universe which had before been only hinted at. While a direct sequel to ReaMde, I'd also suggest listening to (perhaps Stephenson's finest work) Cryptonomicon.

Historia
One man—visionary billionaire restaurant chain magnate T. R. Schmidt, Ph.D.—has a Big Idea for reversing global warming, a master plan perhaps best described as “elemental.” But will it work? Ranging from the Texas heartland to the Dutch royal palace in the Hague, from the snow-capped peaks of the Himalayas to the sunbaked Chihuahuan Desert, Termination Shock brings together a disparate group of characters from different cultures and continents who grapple with the real-life repercussions of global warming.

Black Mirror esque, and ENTIRELY too relatable
Revisado: 02-01-24
I've been listening to Neal Stephenson for a few months now. I started with Snow Crash, and was immediately hooked by Stephenson's grounded projections for technology and society. Once again, Stephenson's character work is top-tier. Some how he manages to avoid the pitfall of having an understandable-but-frustrating antagonist: every character truely believes they are doing the right thing, for selfless reasons. Paired with one of the best narrations I've EVER heard, Termination Shock is a MUST LISTEN!

A historically grounded WWII fiction with true character
Revisado: 12-03-23
Split between two converging timeliness, Cryptonomicon might have my favorite cast of characters that I've met in ages. Grounded and steeped in real histories, I enjoyed many an "Ah-ha!" moment as I recognized bits of WWII espionage.

King's greatest Western
Revisado: 10-08-22
King has an uncanny way of sweeping you away with classical wester adventure... Before dumping the icey water of a sickly and horrifying world on your head. I don't know if this will by my favorite book in the series, but it was damn good!

Historia
On an entirely normal, beautiful fall day in Chester's Mill, Maine, the town is inexplicably and suddenly sealed off from the rest of the world by an invisible force field. Planes crash into it and fall from the sky in flaming wreckage, a gardener's hand is severed as "the dome" comes down on it, people running errands in the neighboring town are divided from their families, and cars explode on impact. No one can fathom what this barrier is, where it came from, and when - or if - it will go away.

A FASCINATING premise with lack-luster performance
Revisado: 08-11-22
I've listened to a fist-full of King books at this point, and I have to say this one has been the most disappointing... Not for its contents, but rather for the performance.
The constant flat narration feels more in line with that of a bored college student, being forced to complete an assignment, than that of a true story-teller. A near-complete lack of character voices had me incessantly grasping for names, instead of paying attention to the story. The only voices that DID stand out, only did so because of their annoying drawls, wines, or intonation.
This is too long of a book from too predominant of an author to be handled in such a way. I feel that the narrator has alot of potential, but may have just been out-classes by their assignment.

Historia
When the Imperial prison barge Purge—temporary home to five hundred of the galaxy’s most ruthless killers, Rebels, scoundrels, and thieves—breaks down in a distant part of space, its only hope appears to lie with a Star Destroyer found drifting and seemingly abandoned. But when a boarding party from the Purge is sent to scavenge for parts, only half of them come back—bringing with them a horrific disease so lethal that within hours, nearly all aboard the Purge die in ways too hideous to imagine.

Perfect for a long drive!
Revisado: 08-06-22
An entertaining one-shot from a galaxy far far away. Excellently acted with great sound design. This book is more on an audio-drama that a reading, which was EXACTLY what I was looking for.
While predictable and a little simple at times, I still greatly enjoyed the story. A worthy purchase to help you along any too-long road trip.
