Transformed: Moving to the Product Operating Model was written to bridge the gap between where most companies are right now and where they need to be. The leaders of these companies know they must transform to compete in an era of rapidly changing enabling technology, but most of them have never operated this way before.

The answer I’ve been looking for!
Revisado: 01-05-25
This describes exactly what we are struggling with and how to get past these problems. We are small so not the same level of resistance described regarding large organizations. Quite long, but great content and I will likely buy the paper version as a result for reference as I try to implement this.

Historia
In the old days, when we made physical products, setting project goals wasn’t that hard. But in today’s service - and software-driven world, “done” is less obvious. When is Amazon done? When is Google done? Or Facebook? In reality, services powered by digital systems are never done. So then how do we give teams a goal that they can work on? Mostly, we simply ask teams to build features - but features are the wrong way to go. We often build features that create no value. Instead, we need to give teams an outcome to achieve.

A change in focus that leads to solving problems rather than doing the same thing over and over and expecting different results. The examples were spot on and have me very good ideas on how to improve what my company does.

Historia
In Everthing Is F*cked, Mark Manson turns his gaze from the inevitable flaws within each individual self to the endless calamities taking place in the world around us. Drawing from the pool of psychological research on these topics, as well as the timeless wisdom of philosophers such as Plato, Nietzsche, and Tom Waits, he dissects religion and politics and the uncomfortable ways they have come to resemble one another. He looks at our relationships with money, entertainment, and the internet, and how too much of a good thing can psychologically eat us alive.

Philosophy book disguised as click-bait
Revisado: 07-19-24
Listened two it twice. It’s entertaining at 1.2x. I will likely revisit it periodically. It is full of wonderful histories and great explanations that make complicated subject matter pretty easy to understand. In the end it changed my approach to my work and I am less worried about the modern social and political morass in which we live.

Part memoir, part history, Burn Book is a necessary chronicle of tech’s most powerful players. This is the inside story we’ve all been waiting for about modern Silicon Valley and the biggest boom in wealth creation in the history of the world. When tech titans crowed that they would “move fast and break things,” Kara Swisher was moving faster and breaking news. While covering the explosion of the digital sector in the early 1990s, she developed a long track record of digging up and reporting the facts about this new world order.

Great writer - hire a narrator
Revisado: 06-28-24
Great autobiography, biography, history, tech, politics and “truth to power” book. I will buy a hard copy next time for her next book if narrated by the author because there is an art and skill to narration that is entirely missing. It diminishes the impact of the words. I don’t say this to be mean. I say it because I am lazy and don’t think I will make it through this kind of book unless it’s spoon fed to me as I walk my dog or drive to work. It’s a lot of work to record a book so pay a professional so you can keep writing and speaking truth to power.

Historia
Most of us have a limited understanding of the powerful role economics has played in shaping human civilization. This makes economic history - the study of how civilizations structured their environments to provide food, shelter, and material goods - a vital lens through which to think about how we arrived at our present, globalized moment. Designed to fill a long-empty gap in how we think about modern history, these 48 lectures are a comprehensive journey through more than 600 years of economic history.

Historia
The Napoleonic Wars saw fighting on an unprecedented scale in Europe and the Americas. It took the wealth of the British Empire, combined with the might of the continental armies, almost two decades to bring down one of the world's greatest military leaders and the empire that he had created. Napoleon's ultimate defeat was to determine the history of Europe for almost 100 years. From the frozen wastelands of Russia, through the brutal fighting in the Peninsula to the blood-soaked battlefield of Waterloo, this book tells the story of the dramatic rise and fall of the Napoleonic Empire.

Global setup to the World Wars
Revisado: 01-18-24
Dense content brought to life by a very good narrator. This book is great for is global illustration to what I though of as a conquest of Europe. You might need a map to keep up with the story told region by region and empire by empire around the turn of the 19th century (1800). Rich in political intrigue, double agents, and king making. Reality is more interesting than fiction.

Make a time budget. Pray instead. There, I saved you the time of having to listen to this.
If you are not deeply Christian and want a bunch of biblical references to inspire you, this is going to be a disappointment. It’s a good 2 chapters of an incomplete book.

Good inspiring story. I realized yesterday, while playing tennis that I was playing to not lose rather than win. Today almost verbatim I hear her say that exact thing. “Maybe universal energy,” says the atheist.
Only suggestion is delegate the narration next time. Start writing the next book instead. I am sure there will be many more books to come.

Made me think about what is possible
Revisado: 03-20-23
I have no desire to go without money, but I like the fact that he did what I didn’t think possible. It makes me wonder what I can do that is difficult but not a difficult as his moneyless year. This is a principled mountain climb … not to go somewhere but to extend our idea of what’s possible. We don’t get hung up on how someone achieves an ultra marathon so why complain about “preaching.” His beliefs and resolve allowed him to achieve something I didn’t think possible. It also inched me towards less waste. This book delivered exactly what I expected and more.
