In Unruly, David Mitchell explores how early England’s monarchs, while acting as feared rulers firmly guiding their subjects’ destinies, were in reality a bunch of lucky bastards who were mostly as silly and weird in real life as they appear today in their portraits.

No Respect for Anyone
Revisado: 11-05-23
David Mitchell has no respect for anyone, not the royals, not historians, definitely not the reader of this book. It's a retelling of familiar history without any regard for what people will think about it and as such, is an absolute must for your collection.

Historia
Inside this bundle, you’ll find three stories which established Edith Wharton as a literary legend. Originally written over a hundred years ago, these stories have stood the test of time to resonate in the hearts of people to this very day. Reflecting the life of the upper-class aristocrats and socialites, The House of Mirth and The Age of Innocence offer tragic tales, while Ethan Frome tells a story in a small wintery town of Massachusetts.

I tried, I really tried
Revisado: 02-12-23
A great Gilded Age yarn from good ol' Edith Wharton. I did try the narrator because it was three books in one, but alas, you get what you pay for. The narrator has a nice voice, and is undoubtedly a good overall reader, but, he seems to be able to only do one voice for men, and one for women, (which sounds like the Dame in a Xmas Panto). He doesn't seem to be able to pronounce French words, which is unfortunate because these books are loaded with them.
I think I'd like to try the same narrator on a non-fiction work and see how it goes, he does have a very nice voice, just the wrong pick for these stories if you care about that sort of thing. Cheers to him anyway, but I'm going with a different narrator for these, it is worth the expense.

Historia
From tales of chivalrous knights to the barbarity of trial by ordeal, no era has been a greater source of awe, horror, and wonder than the Middle Ages. In handsomely crafted prose and with the grace and authority of his extraordinary gift for narrative history, William Manchester leads us from a civilization tottering on the brink of collapse to the grandeur of its rebirth, the Renaissance.

Surprisingly out of date
Revisado: 06-05-21
The writer is a talented historian in terms of 20th century material. He has not done quite as well with the early moderns. With respect, skip this one.

Narrator is perfectly fine and story is servicable
Revisado: 11-22-20
1. People hate it when narrators change and sometimes have a tough time adjusting.
2. Some people hating on Susan Wokoma are pretty much just racist and you can confidently ignore them. It's true some of the voices are not perfect compared to their actual voice actors but no former narrator ever managed it either. Ms. Wokoma is being subjected to unrealistic and unobtainable standards because she is a black woman.
3. The story is a WoW tale. It fills in the gap between expansions and is a perfectly serviceable little adventure. It's fun, it's adventure, it's a video game story, lighten up and enjoy the ride.
4. Have to say it again, the narrator is fine. Also she is the voice of Princess Talanji, and an upcoming and deserving talent.

From the Booker Prize-winning author of The Remains of the Day and When We Were Orphans comes an unforgettable edge-of-your-seat mystery that is at once heartbreakingly tender and morally courageous about what it means to be human.

Food for thought
Revisado: 12-14-05
This novel is well-written and well-read, and as other reviewers have pointed out, it makes you think.
The only difficulty I had was that I found it difficult to suspend disbelief and accept this alternate world. This is possibly because it's in the "Contemporary" category rather than Science Fiction where I think it ultimately belongs, but more, I couldn't square the real science and controversy behind this subject with the alternate reality. One only has to look at the political dust-up over mere stem cell research to see how ultimately unrealistic this story is in this setting; in this time period.
But that is my only criticism.
It is a good, solid story.
