Horny and Cringe. There were some fun ideas in the world building, but it was ultimately stupid in its execution. wouldn't recommend.

Historia
In The Anxious Generation, social psychologist Jonathan Haidt lays out the facts about the epidemic of teen mental illness that hit many countries at the same time. He then investigates the nature of childhood, including why children need play and independent exploration to mature into competent, thriving adults. Haidt shows how the “play-based childhood” began to decline in the 1980s, and how it was finally wiped out by the arrival of the “phone-based childhood” in the early 2010s.

Historia
Cameron Winter is troubled in heart and mind. He's plagued by memories of his time as a government operative investigating a notorious Turkish sex trafficker. The fact that the mission was left unfinished still haunts him and threatens to tear him apart. In the midst of his painful soul-searching, Winter crosses paths with an ex-flame—his first love—and the chance encounter ignites a passion he thought was long lost. But just as soon as she wanders back into Winter's life, the woman vanishes, leaving Winter scrambling to track her down.

I devored this in a day.
Revisado: 10-17-24
I was completely gripped by this novel. I had such a hard time putting it down that it interfered with work. The ending was simultaneously melancholy and yet mostly satisfying. The world the story inhabits is familiar. It's a depressingly dysfunctional world, but I found pleasure in seeing that depicted, as if I was being reminded that I'm not crazy for seeing it. As a narrator, Klavan investigates some of the ugliest realities of our broken world with brutal honesty, but also with sincere empathy. There were occasions when a less disciplined author would have been tempted to moralize, but rather than judging the evil being shown, there is a tragic understanding, a "there but for the grace of God go I" approach that nevertheless does not descend into hand-waving relativism or pseudosophisticated nihilism. My wife is probably sick of hearing me gush about this book and so are you so I'll leave it there. But buy book and read book!

Historia
It has been proclaimed many times, but perhaps never more convincingly than now, when every news cycle seems to deliver further confirmation of a world gone mad. Is this the endgame? Author Spencer Klavan is a classicist, with a Ph.D. from Oxford, and a deep understanding of the West. His analysis: The situation is dire. But every crisis we face today, we have faced before. And we can surmount each one. Klavan brings to the West’s defense the insights of Plato, Aristotle, the Bible, and the Founding Fathers to show that in the wisdom of the past lies hope for the future.

Every syllable of this work is a joy to listen to. This is a book that doesn't just orient the reader towards the good, the true, and the beautiful--it embodies the good, the true, and the beautiful in both style and substance.

Historia
When the National Security Agency’s invincible code-breaking machine encounters a mysterious code it cannot break, the agency calls its head cryptographer, Susan Fletcher, a brilliant, beautiful mathematician. What she uncovers sends shock waves through the corridors of power. The NSA is being held hostage…not by guns or bombs but by a code so complex that if released would cripple U.S. intelligence. Caught in an accelerating tempest of secrecy and lies, Fletcher battles to save the agency she believes in.

Mostly enjoyable
Revisado: 12-13-22
This book was fun, but the writing was unpolished, and the plot was a bit predictable. The characters were flat.
I was also expecting a deeper reflection on the morality of NSA spying. That's kind of the central question driving the plot. There were characters with differing perspectives on the issue, but very little exploration of those perspectives and their rationales, and even less movement by any of the characters towards any different perspective from the one they begin with. It didn't make for a bad story, just a story full of missed opportunities.

President Benson taught that the Book of Mormon was the instrument designed by God to facilitate the gathering of Israel. I've always believed that, but I never understood it until reading this book. This has forever changed the way I think about American History and the way I think about the gathering of Israel.
