Historia
Have you wondered why some 60-year-olds look and feel like 40-year-olds and why some 40-year-olds look and feel like 60-year-olds? While many factors contribute to aging and illness, Dr. Elizabeth Blackburn discovered a biological indicator called telomerase, the enzyme that replenishes telomeres, which protect our genetic heritage. Dr. Blackburn and Dr. Elissa Epel's research shows that the length and health of one's telomeres are a biological underpinning of the long-hypothesized mind-body connection.

The fascinating biological science of telomeres
Revisado: 03-04-24
I’d heard a bit about telomeres in undergraduate and graduate biochemistry courses, but the explosion of knowledge regarding function and structure, along with effects from the environment, on telomere health was fascinating. Parts of the book were a bit “preachy,” but the authors have so much passion for their subject that this was understandable. I’m really glad I listened to it.

Well reasoned and researched
Revisado: 01-03-24
The initial portion of the book establishes a framework for understanding human beings on multiple levels which are indisputable. This is followed by evidence of the status quo which is rather sad. This book will be read widely by both sides, and may begin a return to our sensibilities.

Factfulness: The stress-reducing habit of carrying only opinions for which you have strong supporting facts. When asked simple questions about global trends - what percentage of the world's population live in poverty; why the world's population is increasing; how many girls finish school - we systematically get the answers wrong. In Factfulness, professor of international health and global TED phenomenon Hans Rosling, together with his two longtime collaborators, Anna and Ola, offers a radical new explanation of why this happens.

A great perspective
Revisado: 02-13-23
I am a fan of any book which highlights the multiple paths to ubiquitously poor decision making by humans, and possible solutions to that problem. The advice of not forming an opinion on a complex issue without understanding all of the facts is priceless.

Diet expert extending himself too far
Revisado: 02-06-23
Metabolical is valuable information about the sorry state of modern diets and the chronic diseases that result from that, undoubtedly. However, why does the author feel compelled to throw literally everyone (medicine, dietetics, dentists, USDA, food corporations, the State of Iowa, et al) under the bus? He develops a vast conspiracy, motivated purely by greed/profit, rather than making a reasonable assumption of ignorance, which is more likely. The author has great advice on diet, but his political advice exposes him as a control freak typical of a coastal liberal.

Enlightening
Revisado: 12-29-22
It’s been 40 years since I have taken undergraduate psychology courses, and progress in the field has been significant. The author does a good, reasonably balanced job of covering this progress.

Historia
Intellectuals and Race is a radical book in the original sense - one that goes to the root of the problem. The role of intellectuals in racial strife is explored in an international context that puts the American experience in a wholly new light. The book explores the incentives, the visions, and the rationales that drive intellectuals at the highest levels to conclusions that have often turned out to be counterproductive and even disastrous, not only for particular racial or ethnic groups but for societies as a whole.

Another Home Run
Revisado: 09-23-21
As is true with all of Sowell’s work, this book requires the reader to think constructively outside of the “societally accepted memes” and question common place assumptions about policies enforced by our government.
